Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) has added 5,051 megawatts of renewable energy capacity in the financial year 2025-26, achieving what the company describes as the highest greenfield annual capacity expansion globally by any company, excluding China. The addition brings AGEL's total operational portfolio to 19.3 gigawatts, reinforcing its position as India's largest pure-play renewable energy company.

Capacity Breakdown and Environmental Impact

The new capacity addition comprises 3,409 MW of solar energy, 686 MW of wind power, and 956 MW of wind-solar hybrid capacity. The company expects this new capacity to offset approximately 10 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually. With the total operational portfolio now at 19.3 GW, AGEL projects a massive annual carbon offset of 36 million tonnes.

Khavda Project Development

Most of the new capacity was commissioned at the world's largest renewable energy plant being developed by AGEL in Khavda, Gujarat. The project is built across 538 square kilometers of barren land, spanning an area five times the size of Paris. Out of the planned 30 GW capacity by 2029 at Khavda, AGEL has already installed a cumulative capacity of 9,413 MW at the site.

The Khavda project utilizes advanced bifacial solar modules that generate electricity from both sides by capturing sunlight directly and from reflections off the ground, along with solar trackers to maximize electricity generation. The facility also deploys 5.2 MW wind turbines, which the company describes as among the most powerful onshore units globally. The project employs waterless robotic cleaning systems, leading to near-zero water usage for module cleaning and improved operational efficiency.

Battery Energy Storage Systems

The company has brought online an initial 1,376 megawatt hours (MWh) of battery energy storage systems (BESS) at Khavda, representing one of the world's largest single-location deployments. This capacity was commissioned within eight months of starting work at the site and supports grid stability and renewable integration.

Executive Commentary and Future Targets

Sagar Adani, Executive Director of AGEL, stated that the addition of over 5 GW of new capacity "marks a watershed moment for India's renewable energy sector, placing the country firmly on the global map of leading the clean energy transition." He described it as "a significant leap in accelerating the country's shift to a low-carbon economy and strengthening energy security." Adani emphasized that the achievement demonstrates that "ultra large-scale renewable energy deployment is not only possible but also executable." He noted that this milestone strengthens the company's progress toward its target of 50 GW by 2030, while continuing to deliver sustainable and inclusive growth through renewables and energy storage solutions.

Environmental and Governance Recognition

AGEL continues to strengthen its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices. The company was ranked first in the Global Top 100 Green Utilities list for 2025 by Energy Intelligence. Additionally, AGEL retained its position as India's top sustainability performer in the power sector for the second consecutive year according to NSE Sustainability Ratings and Analytics. The announcement was made from Ahmedabad on April 1, 2026, as part of the company's commitment to transparency in reporting its operational achievements and environmental impact metrics.
