GAIL to Commission its First Green Hydrogen Project in April

Last Updated on 26th March 2024

GAIL is set to commission its first green hydrogen project in central India in April. This marks a significant milestone in India's journey towards clean and sustainable energy. The project is located at the Vijaipur complex in Madhya Pradesh. The unit at the Vijaipur complex is expected to produce about 4.3 metric tons of green hydrogen per day.

The hydrogen produced will have a purity of about 99.999% by volume, making it suitable for a variety of applications, including fuel cells for electric vehicles and power generation. The 10-megawatt proton exchange membrane electrolyzer, a crucial component for the green-hydrogen-producing unit, has been imported from Canada. This electrolyzer will play a pivotal role in the production of green hydrogen, a clean-burning fuel.

The commissioning of this project is not without challenges. As with any new technology, there are likely to be initial hiccups. However, the team at GAIL is confident that these will be sorted out at the commissioning stage. Once these initial challenges are overcome, the unit is expected to start producing green hydrogen within a month's time.

This project aligns with India's aim to reach 5 million tons of annual green hydrogen production capacity by 2030. It represents a significant step towards achieving this ambitious goal. By investing in green hydrogen, GAIL is not only contributing to India's energy security but also promoting sustainable development.

In conclusion, the commissioning of GAIL's first green hydrogen project is a landmark event in India's energy landscape. It underscores the country's commitment to embracing clean energy technologies and reducing its carbon footprint. As this project moves from commissioning to production, it will undoubtedly serve as a model for future green hydrogen projects in the country.

Objectives of the Project

Promoting Clean Energy: The primary objective of this project is to produce green hydrogen, a clean-burning fuel. Unlike grey or blue hydrogen, which is produced from natural gas or coal, green hydrogen production does not emit carbon dioxide. This makes it a promising solution for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and combating climate change.

Enhancing Energy Security: By producing green hydrogen domestically, GAIL aims to enhance India's energy security. The project will reduce India's dependence on imported fossil fuels and provide a reliable supply of clean energy.

Achieving National Targets: The project aligns with India's aim to reach 5 million tons of annual green hydrogen production capacity by 2030. It represents a significant step towards achieving this ambitious goal.

Diversifying Applications: The green hydrogen produced will be  suitable for a variety of applications, including fuel cells for electric vehicles and power generation.

How is Green Hydrogen Produced?

Green hydrogen, unlike other forms of hydrogen, is produced with a clean conscience. Here's the process breakdown:

Electrolysis: The key ingredient is splitting water molecules (H2O) into their elemental components: hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2). This separation happens through a process called electrolysis.

Renewable Energy Power:  But electrolysis itself doesn't guarantee green credentials. To make it truly eco-friendly, the electricity powering this process must come from renewable sources like solar, wind, or hydropower.
