The Lara Super Thermal Power Station is a coal-fired power facility situated near the village of Lara, in the Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh. NTPC Ltd, which owns a 100% stake in the project, is developing the expansion phase of the superthermal power project.

Project Background

The Lara Super Thermal Power Plant is situated in Lara village, southeast of Raigarh district in the state of Chhattisgarh, India. The project covers a total area of 2,400 acres.

Project Scope
The Lara Integrated Thermal Power Project is a functioning power station with a capacity of 1600 megawatts (MW) located in Chhattisgarh. It consists of several units, with some now inactive. Due to some reasons, the fifth phase of the project was canceled and now the updated total capacity of the project is 3200 MW. The plant utilizes Super Critical technology for Stage-I and ultra-critical technology for Stage II. Stage 1 (Phase I and Phase II)
NTPC and the government of Chhattisgarh signed an MoU in July 2009 to develop the 4GW Lara superthermal power project.
The power plant will comprise five 800 MW units to be completed in separate stages. The initial phase of 1.6 gigawatts is being built on 1,400 acres of land and consists of two 800-megawatt units.
The investment for the first phase was approved in November 2012. Phase one development began in December 2012 following the receipt of environmental clearance.
Stage 2 (Phase III and Phase IV)
Phase two of the power plant consists of two pulverized coal-fired units, each with a capacity of 800 MW. The foundation stone for this phase was laid on 24th February 2024.
The system will include a steam generator, turbine generator, auxiliary components, and an electrostatic precipitator. The power plant will have a Nox control system, a flue gas desulphurization system, and either a 220m-high single stack chimney or two 150m-high stack chimneys.
The balance of the plant (BOP) comprises coal handling system, ash management system, induced draft cooling towers, pulverizer mills, water and wastewater treatment system, transformers, and a switchyard.

Project cost
The initial stage of the station has been developed with a project cost of around USD 2 billion (INR 15,800 crores), and the second stage of this undertaking will be built on the area already used for the first phase. No extra land will be needed for the project. Stage II will require a financial investment of USD 1.8 billion (INR 15,530 crores).
