Project Overview

The Permian Energy Center is a 460 MWAC utility-scale solar plus battery storage project located in Andrews County, Texas. This project is developed by Ørsted and includes 420 MWAC of solar PV and 40 MWAC of battery storage built across 3,600 acres of land. This project site is located alongside existing oil and gas installations and is supplying electricity for 80,000 homes in West Texas. The construction of the project began in November 2019 and was commissioned by May 2021.

Project Background

Orsted Permian Energy Center

The Permian Energy Center construction started in November 2019 and was being developed by Lincoln Clean Energy (LCE) a leading onshore developer with assets primarily in Texas. During this course, on 27th November 2019, Ørsted announced the acquisition of Lincoln Clean Energy (LCE). Since the acquisition, LCE has officially changed its name to Ørsted and became a part of the Ørsted organization. With immediate effect, Ørsted became the owner and developer of the Permian Energy Center. This Ørsted renewable energy project project is the first utility-scale solar plus battery storage project in the U.S.

Benefits of Permian Energy Center

Clean Energy for 80,000 homes in West Texas: This project includes solar and battery storage in an oil and gas-dominated region that supports the clean energy goals of the US.

Economic Impact: Exxon Mobil has a 12-year PPA for the project which provides about USD 4 million in landowner payments and property tax payments to the local community annually.

Orsted's Portfolio Expansion: The Permian Energy Center is the company's first onshore utility-scale solar plus battery storage project in the US.

Employment Opportunities: This project supported about 300 direct employment opportunities, contributing significantly to local workforce engagement during the project phase.

Conclusion

The Permian Energy Center is a 420 MW of solar power with 40 MW of battery storage in the Permian Basin region. It is developed, owned, and operated by Ørsted. It delivers renewable power to up to 80,000 homes. By repurposing a former oilfield into a solar+ battery facility, the Permian Energy Center is Ørsted’s first utility-scale solar plus battery storage project in the U.S.
