Vineyard Wind, the country's largest federally permitted and constructed offshore wind project, is now fully operational approximately 15 miles off the coast of Massachusetts.
The project marks a major milestone for the U.S. offshore wind industry, completing its development more than eight years after Massachusetts selected it in its first offshore wind auction.
Vineyard Wind has officially reached full commercial operations, marking a significant milestone for the U.S. offshore wind industry and strengthening New England's regional energy supply. The project is now contributing its full generation capacity to the electricity grid, increasing the availability of renewable power across the region.
The milestone comes alongside Revolution Wind reaching full power, further expanding New England's offshore wind generation capacity. With both projects fully operational, the region is positioned to benefit from increased clean energy generation, improved electricity supply, and greater renewable energy contributions to its power grid.
Government Reaction
Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey celebrated the news, calling it "a major milestone for the American offshore wind industry" and "an important boost" for New England's electrical grid. In a statement, she said Vineyard Wind has already saved Massachusetts families and businesses millions of dollars on their electricity bills.
With the project at full commercial operation alongside Revolution Wind, she said, offshore wind will bring down the price of electricity even further in New England. "My administration will continue to support this industry and its workers," Healey said.
Project Capacity
Vineyard Wind's 62 turbines are capable of generating 800 megawatts, enough electricity to power about 400,000 homes in the region.
The slightly smaller Revolution Wind project can generate 704 megawatts and power about 350,000 homes.

Why Offshore Wind Matters to New England
Offshore wind has long been a cornerstone of New England's energy plans. According to WBUR, the six states have no oil or gas reserves, and there is not a great deal of open land on which to build renewables such as solar and onshore wind.
The region does, however, have what the outlet describes as phenomenal conditions for offshore wind: the relatively shallow waters off the coast have some of the strongest and most consistent winds in the world.
Even so, what looks good on paper has played out differently in practice. The U.S. offshore wind industry has faced years of economic and political headwinds, and the future of all but a handful of projects remains unclear.
Vineyard Wind Marks a Major Milestone in Offshore Wind Development
Vineyard Wind has progressed through several stages of development, including permitting, construction, and turbine installation, before reaching full commercial operations.
The project also underwent a federal review process and received the necessary approvals to resume construction activities.
After completing construction, the project focused on bringing its remaining turbines online and connecting them to the New England electricity grid.
With a total investment of approximately USD 4.5 billion, Vineyard Wind generated employment opportunities for around 3,500 people, including a significant number of union workers, contributing to the regional workforce and offshore wind industry.
