U.S. Secretaries of Energy and the Interior, Chris Wright and Doug Burgum, announced the finalization of four long-term agreements between Japan's JERA and U.S. LNG producers. These deals are set to supply up to 5.5 million tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) annually over 20 years, potentially adding over USD 200 billion to the U.S. GDP and supporting more than 50,000 American jobs.

The finalized agreements include binding sales and purchase agreements with NextDecade Corporation and Commonwealth LNG, alongside heads of agreements with Sempra Infrastructure and Cheniere Marketing LLC. These contracts will source LNG from the U.S. Gulf Coast, with deliveries commencing around 2030. The deals are structured as free-on-board (FOB) contracts, providing flexibility in delivery destinations.reuters.com

Economic Impact

According to a study commissioned by JERA and conducted by S&P Global, the agreements are projected to contribute over USD 200 billion to the U.S. GDP and support more than 50,000 jobs. This aligns with the Trump administration's efforts to boost American energy exports and economic growth.

JERA's decision to diversify its LNG supply portfolio by increasing purchases from the U.S. reflects Japan's strategy to reduce reliance on traditional suppliers and enhance energy security. The agreements are part of JERA's broader plan to secure long-term, flexible LNG contracts to meet Japan's growing energy demands.

Official Statements

Secretary Wright hailed the agreements as a significant milestone, emphasizing their potential to unlock substantial economic benefits. Secretary Burgum expressed pride in the collaboration, highlighting its contribution to the nation's economy and job creation. JERA CEO Yukio Kani also celebrated the deals, noting their role in strengthening the energy partnership between the U.S. and Japan.

The finalization of these LNG agreements marks a significant development in U.S.-Japan energy relations. By securing long-term LNG supplies, both nations aim to bolster economic growth, create jobs, and enhance energy security, reinforcing their strategic partnership in the global energy market.
