The world's largest solar PV manufacturer, Trina Solar, has commenced the construction of a 1.5 GW green hydrogen electrolyzer gigafactory in Jiangsu province, eastern China. The total estimated project cost is around USD 98 million. This gigafactory will be one of the largest hydrogen electrolyzer factories in the world. Once the project is completed, Trina Hydrogen, a subsidiary of Trina Solar, will become the fifth-largest electrolyzer manufacturer in the world.

The project’s impact on the green hydrogen industry:

  • Increased competition: Trina Solar's entry into the market puts pressure on existing electrolyser manufacturers to innovate and reduce their prices.
  • Technological advancement: Trina Solar's research and development efforts will contribute to further improvements in electrolyser technology.
  • Growth of the Green hydrogen market: By making green hydrogen more affordable and accessible, Trina Solar is helping to create a new market for this clean fuel.

The official groundbreaking ceremony was held in the city of Yangzhou last week. The facility is expected to be fully operational by June 2024. Trina Solar’s Asia Pacific president, Todd Li, recently announced that the company will sell its alkaline electrolyzers in the global market.
