The PKN ORLEN Refinery in Plock has Awarded a Contract for a Projected New Plant

KBR Inc. has been awarded multiple contracts by Polski Koncern Naftowy SA (PKN ORLEN) to provide various process technologies for the operator's proposed project to add an integrated solvent deasphalting (SDA) and residue fluid catalytic cracking (RFCC) plant to its 16.3 million tonnes per year dual refining and petrochemical manufacturing site in Plock, Poland.

KBR will offer basic engineering design and technology licensing for the SDA and RFCC units as part of the contracts, the service provider announced on July 27.

The SDA unit will be outfitted with KBR's supercritical solvent recovery ROSE technology to assist PKN ORLEN in producing cleaner, upgraded bottom-of-the-barrel (BOTB) feedstock for the new RFCC unit, which will use KBR's dual-riser MAXOFIN technology, which will allow the operability of the new RFCC unit using a combination of conventional FCC operating conditions and KBR's proprietary catalyst additives and equipment.

According to Daniel Obajtek, president of PKN ORLEN, the proposed BOTB processing project at Plock is an initiative to advance a pillar under PKN Orlen's ORLEN2030 strategy, notably addressing maximizing profitability of existing operations to boost overall competitiveness.

In a second July 27 announcement, PKN Orlen stated that the SDA-RFCC plant will improve the Plock refinery's flexibility by allowing it to change production between gasoline and petrochemical products to satisfy existing customer needs based on current demand.

PKN ORLEN said it aims to commence basic design of the combined SDA-RFCC project in the coming months and, if approved, begin the process of selecting a general contractor for the plant's construction.

The technology license agreement' value was not disclosed by KBC or PKN ORLEN.
