Maire Tecnimont has been awarded a Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) contract by MadoquaPower2X to develop an integrated green hydrogen and green ammonia plant located in the industrial zone of Sines, Portugal.

MadoquaPower2X, a joint venture between a consortium comprised of Madoqua Renewables, Power2X, and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), has entrusted Maire Tecnimont with the task of designing an innovative plant that will produce both green hydrogen and green ammonia. This integration allows for synergies in production processes and underscores a commitment to sustainable energy solutions.

Tecnimont’s scope of work includes designing the integration of electrolyzers, an air separation unit for nitrogen production, an ammonia production plant, as well as storage and ship loading facilities. Additionally, as part of the agreement, Tecnimont will prepare an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) proposal for the construction activities of the plant. March 22, 2024, is the anticipated date for the final notice to proceed.

The project involves the production of green hydrogen using alkaline-water electrolyzer technology and the production of green ammonia through the Haber-Bosch process. Green ammonia will be transported via a pipeline to the Port of Sines, where it will serve as a maritime fuel, contributing to the decarbonization of the shipping industry.

MadoquaPower2X will harness renewable energy generated by solar and wind assets under development in Portugal, coupled with up to 500 MW of electrolysis capacity, to produce up to 1,200 metric tons per day (MTPD) of green ammonia. The project aims to establish an export energy carrier value chain between the Port of Sines (Portugal) and the Northwestern European Hub.
