Tata Communications has announced strategic investments of close to USD 450 million to build an AI superhighway in India, a high-speed, low-latency network fabric connecting the country's key AI data-center corridors.
10,000 Kilometers of AI-Ready Fiber Planned Across India
The planned investment is stated at USD 400-450 million and will fund approximately 10,000 kilometres of new long-haul fiber across India, creating one of the country's largest AI-ready connectivity networks.
Announced on October 26, 2026, the project will be integrated with Tata Communications' global network backbone, providing customers with an end-to-end connectivity fabric supporting the performance, resilience, and scale required for next-generation AI workloads.
The infrastructure is designed for global hyperscalers, AI platforms, neo-cloud providers, and enterprises and will roll out across three phases in India's highest-growth AI corridors.
A Data Center Market the Company Expects to Exceed USD 1 Billion
Ganesh Lakshminarayanan, MD and CEO of Tata Communications, framed the investment around the emergence of a substantial domestic market for data-center-to-data-center connectivity.
"We are excited about the opportunity in India's data center-to-data center connectivity, which we believe could evolve into a market exceeding USD 1 billion over the medium term," he said. "With our planned investments, we are building on our existing strengths to create one of the most comprehensive data center connectivity platforms in the market, positioning us to capture this significant growth opportunity."
Lakshminarayanan also pointed to the demand-driven nature of the build-out, noting that a growing proportion of the company's expansion is being driven by anchor customer commitments and contracted demand, which he described as providing a strong foundation for sustainable growth, efficient capital deployment and long-term value creation.
Rupesh Chokshi, Chief Product and Technology Officer, Executive Vice President & Global Business Head – Network Services, emphasized that compute alone is insufficient for the AI economy.
"The AI economy needs more than compute. It needs a network built for speed, scale and resilience," he said. "Our AI Network Fabric will give our global customers the ultra-low-latency, high-capacity, and resilient connectivity they need to scale AI with confidence. By connecting India's AI and data center hubs to the world, we are enabling our customers to grow and helping fuel India's next chapter of economic growth."

Connectivity Emerging as Critical as Compute and Energy
According to the company, India's data center industry is poised for significant growth in the near future, driven by accelerating cloud adoption, AI deployment, increasing data localization requirements, and growing enterprise demand for resilient, high-capacity digital infrastructure.
As data center capacity expands rapidly across the country, Tata Communications argues that connectivity is becoming as critical as compute power and energy availability in enabling the next generation of digital services.
The investment is intended to strengthen India's emergence as a global AI and cloud connectivity gateway, meeting demand from hyperscale and neocloud providers, AI workloads, digital-native businesses, Global Capability Centers (GCCs), enterprises, and emerging cloud platforms. It is also aimed at enabling global hyperscalers, digital platforms, and multinational enterprises to scale their operations in India as the country enters its next phase of digital transformation.
Phase One Targets the Mumbai-Pune-Hyderabad-Chennai Corridor
The first phase of the program will focus on the Mumbai-Pune-Hyderabad-Chennai corridor, which the company describes as one of India's most important AI and hyperscale growth routes. Subsequent phases will expand connectivity into emerging East Coast and Western India data center ecosystems, including Vizag, Bhubaneswar, Jamnagar, GIFT City, and other strategic locations.
By linking the key AI corridors and data center clusters with international cable landing stations, Tata Communications will enable seamless connectivity between India and major global AI hubs, positioning India as a strategic gateway in the global digital infrastructure landscape.
In parallel, the company will continue supporting existing enterprise and data center connectivity requirements by scaling its current National Long Distance and metro network footprint, ensuring continued support for current growth while building capacity for future demand.
Built on a Global Network Backbone
The AI super highway will sit atop Tata Communications' existing network fabric, which the company says remains the backbone of its portfolio. It operates one of the largest wholly owned and most advanced subsea fiber networks underpinning the internet backbone, spanning more than 500,000 kilometres of subsea optical fiber and more than 200,000 kilometers of terrestrial fiber.
The company has also been expanding this backbone internationally. In June 2026, Tata Communications enhanced its Tata Global Network (TGN) capabilities by planning a new subsea cable system between Mumbai and Singapore and invested as a consortium member in a new subsea cable system connecting Chennai to Singapore, with expected Ready for Service (RFS) in Q4 2029. In 2025, it integrated the TGN IA2 (Tata Global Network – Intra-Asia 2) submarine cable, which improved latency for faster performance, enhanced reliability through greater redundancy, and increased network diversity through seamless interconnection with TGN IA.
Tata Communications, part of the Tata Group and listed on the NSE (TATACOMM) and BSE (500483), operates as a global digital ecosystem enabler in more than 190 countries and territories.
Winning India's Hyperscale Boom Starts with Seeing Every Data Center Deal First
The Indian data center market is expanding at a pace few sectors can match, with hyperscale campuses, colocation builds, and edge facilities competing for land, power, and capital across the region. Yet the biggest opportunities are rarely announced in headlines first; they emerge in tender notices, permitting updates, and early-stage planning pipelines that only diligent trackers capture.
Whether you supply cooling systems, fiber infrastructure, construction services, or investment capital, your ability to move ahead of competitors depends on knowing which projects are moving from concept to construction and when.
The Global Project Tracking (GPT) platform by Blackridge Research gives you a real-time, region-wide view of the data center development pipeline, so you can identify prospects, qualify leads, and time your outreach with precision.
