ScottishPower Renewables has launched the first statutory public consultation for its proposed MachairWind offshore windfarm, inviting residents and stakeholders across Scotland’s west coast to provide feedback and shape the early design of the project.

Running from May 26 to July 6, the consultation includes a virtual room and in-person drop-in events across Islay, Jura, Colonsay, Ross of Mull, and Iona. Community input gathered during this period will help inform key aspects of the project, which is still in the preliminary planning stage.

Early-Stage Development and Potential Impact

The MachairWind offshore windfarm is being designed to deliver renewable power at a large scale, with the potential to supply electricity to millions of homes. However, no final decisions have been made on the number, size, or capacity of the turbines.

To aid public understanding, ScottishPower has provided visual montages showing how the windfarm could appear from 14 different viewpoints across the islands. These locations were selected in consultation with local stakeholders, including Argyll & Bute Council and NatureScot.

Community Input Encouraged

Kiera Wilson, Development Lead for MachairWind at ScottishPower Renewables, underscored the importance of engaging local communities throughout the process.

“We’ve taken an open and transparent approach over the last three years to ensure local people remain informed and involved,” Wilson said. “This consultation is a vital opportunity for residents to share their views and help shape the development to minimise potential impacts on the landscape.”

The consultation period represents a key phase in the project’s development, allowing ScottishPower Renewables to gather local insights before refining the windfarm’s design and advancing through regulatory approvals.
