Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) has issued a Request for Qualification (RFQ) for the seventh round of projects under the Kingdom's National Renewable Energy Programme (NREP), according to Zawya News Agency. The latest round features four solar photovoltaic (PV) projects and two wind projects with a combined capacity of 5,300 megawatts (MW).

Solar Project Portfolio

The solar component of the seventh tender round comprises four distinct projects across multiple regions of Saudi Arabia. The largest solar project is the 1,400 MW Tabarjal 2 project, located in Al-Jawf province. The remaining solar projects include the 600 MW Mawaq project in Hail, the 600 MW Tathleeth project in Asir, and the 500 MW South Al-Ula project in Medina.

These four solar photovoltaic projects collectively represent a total capacity of 5,300 MW, being tendered in the seventh round of the National Renewable Energy Programme.

Wind Energy Development

The wind energy portion of the tender consists of two major projects, both situated in Medina province. SPPC has listed the 1,300 MW Bilghah project as the larger of the two wind developments. The second wind project is the 900 MW Shaqran project, also located in Medina. Together, these two wind projects account for 2,200 MW of renewable energy capacity, representing approximately 41% of the total capacity being tendered in this round.

Programme Progress and Targets

SPPC noted that it has launched tenders for more than 43 gigawatts (GW) of renewable capacity to date through the National Renewable Energy Programme. The company has successfully signed power purchase agreements (PPAs) for over 38 GW of this tendered capacity. While submission deadlines and power purchase agreement terms for the seventh round were not disclosed, the tender represents a significant addition to Saudi Arabia's renewable energy pipeline.

According to Zawya News Agency, Saudi Arabia is targeting renewables to generate 50% of its electricity mix by 2030 as part of its energy transition strategy. The seventh round's 5.3 GW capacity represents a substantial contribution toward achieving this renewable energy target, adding to the Kingdom's growing portfolio of solar and wind projects under the National Renewable Energy Programme.
