RWE and Borussia Dortmund have officially commissioned a new battery storage system at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK, the home stadium of Bundesliga club BVB.
The commissioning took place on 26 October 2026 during the Bundesliga home match against Eintracht Frankfurt and marks the completion of the two partners’ joint energy concept for the Dortmund stadium.
The battery and its capabilities
The battery storage system has a capacity of 3.7 megawatts and can supply this output for just over an hour. The system is linked to the photovoltaic installation on the stadium site, so electricity generated on site can be used even when the sun is not shining.
RWE describes this flexibility as a central benefit of connecting the two systems.
The photovoltaic system
The battery complements the photovoltaic system commissioned in December 2025, which comprises 11,132 solar modules and has a capacity of more than 5 megawatts (MWp). RWE has described it as the world’s most powerful photovoltaic system on a stadium roof, installed on the roof of the BVB FanWelt.
With the new photovoltaic system, BVB can meet up to 45 percent of SIGNAL IDUNA PARK’s electricity requirements.

Statements from the two partners
Dr. Markus Krebber, Chief Executive of RWE AG, said, "With the commissioning of the battery storage system, the entire system comprising the photovoltaic plant and the battery at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK is now fully operational. Linking the two systems makes it possible to use the solar power generated on site even more flexibly, even when the sun isn’t shining. The experts from BVB and RWE have breathed life and energy into our partnership through this project. It provides a solid foundation for further joint developments.”
Carsten Cramer, Chairman of the Executive Board of Borussia Dortmund, said, "SIGNAL IDUNA PARK is not only our iconic home but also a central element of our holistic decarbonisation strategy. With the battery storage system, we are collaborating with RWE to complete a forward-looking energy concept that makes our solar power even more usable. We are delighted that our stadium will thus continue to stand for resource-efficient and innovative action in the future.”
The ongoing partnership
RWE is a “Premium Partner” of BVB and a key part of the “BVB Empowers” initiative. As part of the six-year partnership, RWE will continue to support BVB in optimising the energy management of SIGNAL IDUNA PARK.
The stated aim is to further increase the stadium’s contribution to security of supply, energy efficiency, and decarbonisation.
