Prime Data Centers to Build 550 MW Data Center Campus in Esbjerg, Denmark with $2.3 Billion Investment
Prime Data Centers, an international hyperscale developer and owner in partnership with Brunswick Real Estate, has revealed plans to build a 550 MW data center campus in Esbjerg, Denmark. The company has acquired a 640,000-square-meter site on Nordre Tovrupvej from Esbjerg Municipality for the project.
The construction for the ESB01 data center project could begin in 2027, subject to approval after an environmental impact assessment (EIA). The first phase of the project would include 160 MW in IT capacity and a DKK 15 billion (US$ 2.3 billion) investment.
Project Scale and Capacity
Prime Data Centers intends to construct the facility to the same capacity as some of Europe's largest hyperscale data centers. The 550 MW campus represents a significant addition to Denmark's data center infrastructure, with the substantial 640,000-square-meter site providing ample space for the development.
The phased approach to construction begins with 160 MW of IT capacity in the initial phase, suggesting the project will expand significantly beyond this initial deployment to reach its full 550 MW capacity.
Strategic Partnerships and Municipal Support
Nicholas Laag, founder and CEO of Prime Data Centers, praised the collaborative process with local authorities. "The collaboration with Business Esbjerg and Esbjerg Municipality has been both professional and welcoming. The way the process has been approached has given us great confidence that Esbjerg is the right place to invest, and we look forward to continuing the good cooperation in the further development of the project," Laag stated.
Karsten Rieder, Director of Business Esbjerg, expressed enthusiasm for the project's progression. "After close cooperation with Prime Data Centers in the start-up phase, we now look forward to the upcoming planning and regulatory process," Rieder said.
Jesper Frost Rasmussen, Mayor of Esbjerg Municipality, highlighted how the project validates the municipality's strategic approach. "Prime Data Centers' decision confirms that our strategy works. We have focused on creating good conditions for data-heavy companies, and through close cooperation between Business Esbjerg and the municipality, we have been able to deliver the expertise and service that large international investors expect," Rasmussen commented.

Infrastructure Considerations and Location Benefits
Prime Data Centers selected Esbjerg based on several key infrastructure advantages, including access to fiber connections, power infrastructure, and district heating systems that could potentially utilize surplus heat from the data center. The company is currently in discussions with Energinet regarding grid connections and power supply for the facility.
The investment supports Esbjerg Municipality's broader strategy to attract digital infrastructure projects and data-intensive companies to the region. The municipality has positioned itself as a destination for such developments through focused efforts to create favorable conditions for data center operations.
Timeline and Regulatory Process
The project timeline indicates construction could commence in 2027, contingent upon successful completion of the environmental impact assessment process. This regulatory step represents a critical milestone before the physical development of the ESB01 data center can begin.
The environmental impact assessment will evaluate the potential effects of the large-scale data center development on the local environment, ensuring compliance with Danish environmental regulations before construction authorization.
