PowerX, Inc., and ITOCHU Corporation have secured an order to supply 30 grid-scale battery energy storage systems totaling 75.2 MWh of combined storage capacity for the Miyagi Shiroishi Battery Farm in Shiroishi City, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan.
The project marks a continued expansion of the two companies joint energy storage offering in the Japanese market and is expected to enter commercial operation within fiscal year 2028.
Project Overview and Development Structure
The Miyagi Shiroishi Battery Farm is an extra-high-voltage battery storage project being developed by Miyagi Shiroishi Battery Farm LLC, a project company funded by Tokyu Land Corporation and IBeeT Corporation.
Once operational, the facility will connect to the Tohoku-area power grid to charge and discharge electricity, supporting power supply-demand balancing and facilitating the further integration of renewable energy across the region.
The project has also received government backing. Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade, PowerX, Trade, and Industry selected the facility to receive a subsidy under its FY2025 Subsidy Program for Supporting the Introduction of Energy Storage Systems to Promote the Adoption of Renewable Energy, providing an additional layer of financial support for the development.
Technology and System Specifications
The order covers 30 units of PowerX's Mega Power 2500 battery energy storage system, deployed through the co-branded "PowerX × Bluestorage" package that PowerX and ITOCHU jointly offer to the market.
Each unit is housed in a 10-foot ISO-standard container and uses lithium iron phosphate, or LFP, battery chemistry, with a nominal capacity of 2,507 kWh per unit.
Across the 30 containers, the installation will deliver a total storage capacity of 75.2 MWh and a power conversion system output of 23 MW. According to the two companies, the total storage capacity is equivalent to the daily electricity consumption of approximately 7,000 average Japanese households, illustrating the scale of the project's contribution to local energy needs.
The choice of LFP technology is consistent with broader industry trends in grid-scale storage applications, where the chemistry is valued for its thermal stability and cycle life characteristics.
The use of standardized 10-foot ISO containers also points to a modular deployment approach that can streamline logistics and installation at the Shiroishi City site.
