PM Modi Launches ₹5,400 Crore Development Projects Across Gujarat
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a comprehensive infrastructure development initiative in Gujarat on August 25, 2025, inaugurating and laying foundation stones for projects worth over INR 5,400 crore. The multi-sector development push spans railways, roads, power distribution, housing, and digital governance across his home state.
Railway Infrastructure Modernization
The railway sector received the largest allocation with projects worth INR 1,400 crore dedicated by the Prime Minister. Key railway initiatives include the doubling of the 65-km Mahesana–Palanpur line at a cost of INR 530 crore, designed to enhance passenger convenience and reduce congestion in the region. Gauge conversion projects totaling INR 860 crore cover the Kalol–Kadi–Katosan Road line and the Bechraji–Ranuj line.
These upgrades aim to facilitate faster freight movement, particularly benefiting north Gujarat, which is experiencing rising industrial and agricultural activity. Two new train services were launched as part of the railway expansion. A passenger train service between Katosan Road and Sabarmati was introduced to improve access to religious sites and local markets.
Additionally, a car-loaded freight service from Bechraji was inaugurated to enhance last-mile logistics and industrial connectivity.
Road and Urban Infrastructure Development
Significant road infrastructure projects were launched to address traffic congestion and promote regional trade. The widening of the Viramgam–Khudad–Rampura road was among the key highway enhancements announced. Six-lane underpasses on the Ahmedabad–Mehsana–Palanpur road and a railway overbridge on the Ahmedabad–Viramgam route were also inaugurated.
Urban mobility received attention with the laying of the foundation stone for the Sardar Patel Ring Road widening project, which is expected to reduce congestion around Ahmedabad. Urban infrastructure upgrades include water supply and sewerage improvements designed to support sustainable urban living in the region.

Power Sector Upgrades
Electricity distribution modernization received substantial investment with INR 1,000 crore allocated for upgrades in Ahmedabad, Mehsana, and Gandhinagar under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS). The power sector projects are being implemented under UGVCL (Uttar Gujarat Vij Company Limited).
The electricity infrastructure improvements are designed to deliver multiple benefits, including reduced transmission losses, improved grid resilience during adverse weather conditions, higher transformer safety standards, and enhanced power reliability and efficiency. These developments align with the Power for All vision and aim to support the state's industrial and residential energy requirements.
Housing and Digital Governance Initiatives
Social welfare received focus through housing projects under the PMAY (Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana) Urban scheme. Modi inaugurated an in-situ slum rehabilitation project in Ahmedabad's Ramapir No Tekro area. This initiative provides dignified housing for the urban poor, improved access to basic amenities, and upliftment of informal settlements through formal housing solutions.
Digital governance infrastructure was strengthened with the inauguration of administrative facilities. A Stamps and Registration Building in Ahmedabad West was launched to streamline property documentation and citizen services. Additionally, a state-level Data Storage Centre in Gandhinagar was inaugurated to enhance data security and support digital governance in public administration.
These digital infrastructure reforms are part of Gujarat's broader digital transformation strategy and represent a push for efficient, transparent public service delivery across the state. The comprehensive project portfolio reinforces Gujarat's role as a model for integrated infrastructure growth across multiple sectors.
