On February 25, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Sudarshan Setu, India’s longest cable-stayed bridge in the Gulf of Kutch. Spanning an impressive 4.772 kilometers, the Sudarshan Setu connects the Okha mainland to the Bet Dwarka island in Gujarat. 32 piers support the 900-meter-long cable-stayed section of the bridge.

Financed entirely by the Union government, the four-lane bridge had a project cost of approximately USD 120 million (INR 978 crore). Its design facilitates synchronized operations with proposed roll-on-roll-off ferry routes, ensuring smooth cross-gulf movement of people and cargo, thus integrating the mainland with the Beyt Dwarka island township.

The Sudarshan Setu bears immense significance for locals and pilgrims, particularly those visiting the Dwarkadhish Temple. Prior to its construction, pilgrims relied on boat transport to reach Beyt Dwarka. With the completion of the bridge, travel time between Dwarka and Beyt Dwarka will be significantly reduced, easing transportation for devotees and locals alike.

The project, sanctioned in 2017, saw Prime Minister Narendra Modi lay the foundation stone for the bridge on October 7 of the same year. This bridge will ease transportation and significantly reduce the time devotees spend traveling between Dwarka and Beyt-Dwarka. Before the bridge's construction, pilgrims had to rely on boat transport to reach Beyt Dwarka. This iconic bridge will also serve as a major tourist attraction in Devbhumi Dwarka.

Sudarshan Setu boasts a unique design, featuring a footpath adorned with verses from the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita and images of Bhagwan Krishna on both sides. It also has solar panels installed on the upper portions of the footpath, generating one megawatt of electricity.

Project Objective

The bridge connects Okha and Beyt Dwarka islands, reducing the distance between old and new Dwarka by nearly 80 km. By spanning between Okha and Beyt Dwarka islands, the bridge reduces the distance, easing access, and reducing transportation costs and time for thousands of tourists and Hindu pilgrims headed to the ancient Dwarkadhish Temple. Furthermore, by improving accessibility and reducing travel time, the bridge is expected to boost the local economy.
