Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Navi Mumbai International Airport on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone for Mumbai's aviation infrastructure. The new greenfield airport, built by the Adani Group under a Public Private Partnership model, represents India's largest airport project with a first-phase investment of INR 19,650 crore. The airport will commence commercial operations for both domestic and international flights in December this year.

During the inauguration ceremony, PM Modi inspected the newly-constructed facility and described it as a “glimpse of Viksit Bharat,” emphasizing its role in transforming travel and connectivity in Mumbai.

Infrastructure and Capacity Details

The Navi Mumbai International Airport spans an area of 1,160 hectares and will operate in conjunction with the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Upon completion, the aviation facility will handle 90 million passengers per year and process 3.25 million metric tonnes of cargo, establishing itself as one of the world's significant airports. The initial phase features a single runway alongside a single terminal structure, designed to serve 20 million passengers annually.

The airport infrastructure will initially manage 20–22 flights per hour, with provisions to expand this capacity the following year. The first terminal is expected to reach its maximum operational capacity within 12–15 months of opening. The terminal features extensive facilities, including 66 check-in points, 22 self-service baggage drop stations, 29 passenger boarding bridges, and 10 gates for bus boarding. The facility also houses purpose-built sections for express deliveries, high-value items, hazardous materials, and animal transportation.

Advanced Technology and Features

NMIA's operations will incorporate advanced technology, including 5G networks, IoT sensors for monitoring, automated luggage systems, and contactless processing through Digi Yatra, to enhance passenger convenience. The facility will feature an Automated People Mover system connecting all four passenger terminals, a landside APM linking city infrastructure, and dedicated storage facilities for Sustainable Aviation Fuel.

The cargo facility will operate with complete automation, featuring digital consignment tracking, digital transactions, and dedicated climate-controlled sections for medicines and perishable items. The aviation regulator DGCA granted the aerodrome license to the airport on September 30.

Economic Impact and Connectivity

PM Modi highlighted that the airport would enhance economic opportunities by connecting farmers in Maharashtra to markets in the Middle East and Europe. He stated that the new facility would attract investment and new businesses to the area, positioning Mumbai among global cities with multiple airports. The International Air Transport Association said on Tuesday that the new international airport in Navi Mumbai would alleviate the region's capacity limitations, enhance connectivity, and deliver substantial economic and social advantages to India's economy.

The airport is expected to reduce congestion at Mumbai's existing airport infrastructure.

During his address, PM Modi emphasized India's aviation expansion, noting that the country had 74 airports in 2014 and now has over 160. He described his 2014 dream that “even people wearing hawai chappals (slippers) should be able to travel by air,” explaining the importance of establishing new airports across the country to fulfill this vision. PM Modi stated that Mumbai now has “Asia's largest connectivity hub” and praised the city's fully underground metro system as a significant achievement for careful construction in a complex urban environment like Mumbai.

He announced India's target to become the global aviation Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul hub by the end of this decade. The Prime Minister also addressed broader economic reforms, mentioning that next-generation GST reforms have made many items more affordable, boosting people's purchasing power. He noted increased spending during Navratri as reflecting growing confidence and urged citizens to use Swadeshi products to strengthen the economy by keeping Indian money within the country.
