Plug Power Inc. has completed the first phase of hydrogen supply delivery totaling 44.5 metric tons to the H2CAST (Hydrogen Cavern Storage Transition) project in Germany. The company announced on October 21, 2025, that following this successful pilot delivery, it was awarded a second delivery mandate for an additional 35 metric tons of hydrogen to the same project.

The H2CAST project is a joint initiative led by Gasunie and STORAG ETZEL in Germany. Gasunie operates as an energy-infrastructure company and operator of gas pipelines in the Netherlands and North West Germany, while STORAG ETZEL serves as the largest independent supplier of cavern storage facilities in Germany. The project involves repurposing two existing salt caverns into underground storage facilities for renewable hydrogen.

Delivery Timeline and Operations

From April to August 2025, Plug Power safely delivered hydrogen to the H2CAST salt cavern, meeting all delivery timelines and demonstrating the viability of large-scale hydrogen transport and storage in Germany. The company will continue to source the hydrogen from Hy2Gen ATLANTIS, the electrolyzer facility in Werlte, Germany, where Plug holds exclusivity on 100% of the green hydrogen produced.

Jose Luis Crespo, President and CRO of Plug, stated that the success of recent projects in Germany with H2CAST demonstrates that hydrogen is effective and scalable for strategic national energy requirements. He emphasized that Plug's ability to deliver hydrogen on time, in volume, and with the company's own transport and delivery equipment underscores Plug's leadership in Europe's fast-growing hydrogen economy.

Technical Infrastructure and Fleet Capabilities

Plug Power has established substantial delivery infrastructure in Europe with a fleet of 36 Multi Element Gas Containers (MEGCs) rated at 350/380 bar pressure standards. This fleet provides the company with flexible, scalable delivery capability across the European Union. The company continues to expand its hydrogen production capacity in Europe, reflecting market demand for Plug's vertically-integrated approach to meeting hydrogen customer needs.

The H2CAST project expansion showcases Plug's engineering capabilities. The company designed a dedicated unloading skid for the facility, developed by its Netherlands-based team. This engineering solution bridges trailer operations directly into the customer's existing infrastructure, enabling seamless delivery and allowing customers to maximize the commercial value of hydrogen.

Strategic Significance for Energy Transition

The salt cavern storage approach utilized in the H2CAST project addresses critical needs in the energy transition. Salt caverns enable seasonal and high-capacity storage while providing essential services such as grid balancing and flexibility for renewable energy integration. These facilities ensure a continuous supply of hydrogen to industrial users and contribute to the development of a broader European hydrogen infrastructure.

Plug's execution in Germany reflects the company's broader corporate objective of building hydrogen production and fleet capacity across the European Union. The company positions these milestones in Germany as cornerstone achievements for its expanding European operations, reinforcing its role as a global industrial gas company and leading participant in the hydrogen ecosystem worldwide.
