Queretaro marked a milestone for Mexico's clean energy transition with the inauguration of the country's first green hydrogen plant on October 8, coinciding with International Hydrogen Day. The facility represents one of the first of its kind in Latin America and required an MXN 100 million investment to cut carbon emissions, strengthen the circular economy, and advance technologies that could shape the country's energy future.

Governor Mauricio Kuri González led the inauguration ceremony, joined by industry leaders and state officials. The project was made possible through a partnership between German company Gerresheimer and Mexican gas producer Cryoinfra.

Cryoinfra, which operates nationwide, chose Queretaro for its business-friendly environment and commitment to sustainability. Del Prete emphasized the benefits of quality of life, noting: “It is not just the investment or the jobs that matter, but the impact this has on our quality of life.”

Gerresheimer, described as one of the largest healthcare packaging manufacturers in the Americas, views the project as part of a broader shift toward sustainable industrial practices. José Antonio Vega, Gerresheimer's General Manager in Queretaro, explained the company's motivation: “We produce 2.6 billion units annually, so adopting green energy is essential to our responsibility toward our community.”

Fernando Trejo, Regional Deputy Director representing Cryoinfra, underscored the initiative's broader significance in the energy sector. “Green hydrogen is a cornerstone of the energy transition,” Trejo said. “With this plant, we are helping reduce emissions, diversify clean energy use, and set a precedent for others to follow.”
