Austria-based energy group OMV AG has received the first electrolyser components for its 140-MW green hydrogen production facility at Bruck an der Leitha, keeping the project on track for completion by the end of 2027, according to a report by Renewables Now.

The delivery marks the beginning of the installation of the plant's core technology, OMV said on Wednesday. The arrival of the electrolyser components represents a tangible milestone for a project that has been in development as one of the country's most significant renewable hydrogen undertakings.

The project proceeds independently after Masdar withdrawal

The Austrian energy group is proceeding with the project independently after UAE-based investor Masdar withdrew in September from a proposed joint venture that was intended to finance, build, and operate the facility.

Following Masdar's withdrawal, OMV confirmed that the project's scope and completion schedule would remain unchanged. The receipt of the first electrolyser components underscores that confirmation, with the company moving ahead with installation of the core technology on the timeline it had previously communicated.

Production capacity and European significance

The facility at Bruck an der Leitha is designed to produce up to 23,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually using renewable electricity generated from wind, solar and hydropower.

Once operational, the facility is expected to rank among Europe's five largest green hydrogen production plants by capacity, positioning Austria prominently in the European renewable hydrogen landscape.

Construction and technology partners

The project brings together a set of established industrial partners. Austrian construction company Strabag SE is responsible for construction of the facility, while Siemens Energy is handling technical plant engineering and supplying the electrolyzers and other equipment.

The delivery of the first electrolyser components is directly tied to Siemens Energy's role as the supplier of the plant's electrolysis technology, which forms the heart of the hydrogen production process.

Financing structure

The project is supported by a substantial financing package from public institutions. It is being backed by a USD 137.8 million debt facility from Austria's federal development bank, Austria Wirtschaftsservice GmbH (aws), and USD 504.2 million in financing from the European Investment Bank (EIB).

Together, these two facilities provide the public financial underpinning for a project of considerable scale, reflecting the level of institutional support that large European green hydrogen developments have attracted.

Context for Austria's hydrogen ambitions

The development represents a significant step in Austria's efforts to expand renewable hydrogen production. Green hydrogen, produced using renewable electricity, is expected to support industrial decarbonisation and reduce reliance on fossil fuels in sectors where direct electrification can be challenging.

The Bruck an der Leitha facility's scale, a 140-MW electrolyser capacity with annual production of up to 23,000 tonnes, places it among the notable renewable hydrogen projects under construction in Europe, and its expected position among the continent's five largest green hydrogen production plants by capacity highlights the ambition behind the undertaking.

Timeline and outlook

With the first electrolyser components now on site and installation of the plant's core technology beginning, the project remains on track for completion by the end of 2027.

OMV's decision to continue independently after Masdar's September withdrawal from the proposed joint venture has not altered either the scope of the facility or its completion schedule, according to the company's confirmation.

The combination of construction responsibility with Strabag SE, technical plant engineering and equipment supply from Siemens Energy, and financing from aws and the European Investment Bank provides the structural framework for the remaining phase of the project, as installation work proceeds toward the end-of-2027 completion target.

Which Hydrogen Projects Across Austria Are Moving From Blueprint to Build?

Austria's hydrogen economy is accelerating fast, with electrolyser gigafactories, green hydrogen production hubs, and pipeline conversion projects competing for capital, permits, and contractor capacity. But in a sector where funding announcements often outpace actual construction, knowing which projects are genuinely progressing is the difference between capturing opportunity and chasing headlines.
