STX Group, a leading environmental commodity trader, has announced its first offtake of RFNBO (Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin)-compliant e-Methane produced by TURN2X at the company's first commercial plant in Spain.

The agreement, announced from Amsterdam, provides STX Group with access to TURN2X's RFNBO-compliant e-Methane and allows the firm to expand its renewable gas portfolio.

First Certified E-Methane Delivery Concluded

The first delivery of fully RFNBO certified e-Methane took place early in October 2026, with the two companies also in active discussions to work together on future commercial-scale e-Methane projects.

The offtake brings together TURN2X's load-flexible methanation technology and project development skills with STX Group's expertise in environmental commodities, regulatory knowledge, and downstream market access.

By integrating an emerging renewable fuel into its existing product suite, STX Group says it can provide bankability and liquidity in a rapidly growing sector and a route to compliance for obligated parties.

What E-Methane Is and Where It Fits

E-Methane is a synthetic fuel produced from renewable hydrogen derived from electrolysis and biogenic CO2. Like biomethane, the molecule is interchangeable with natural gas, giving it access to the European gas grid and a wide range of applications across the EU and beyond.

According to the announcement, synthetic fuels are a key part of the energy transition, driving investment in electrolysis and carbon capture without the immediate need to build hydrogen infrastructure.

TURN2X's load-flexible methanation plants can also absorb surplus renewable electricity from the grid, which the company says significantly reduces system costs.

Key end-users for e-Methane identified by the companies sit in the transportation sector, including shipping and long-haul trucking, as well as energy intensive industries and dispatchable power for AI data centers and other gas peakers.

Regulatory Demand Driving the Market

Demand for RFNBOs is quickly increasing, with more than ten countries implementing mandatory blending quotas for e-Methane and other RFNBOs as part of the RED III framework. For STX Group, the TURN2X offtake represents a first step in building a broader RFNBO offering.

Diederik Francoys, Global Head of Renewable Gas and Managing Partner at STX Group, described the deal as an important first step for the company in the RFNBO market. He noted that certified RFNBO supply is still scarce, which makes partnering with pioneering producers like TURN2X essential.

Combined with STX Group's regulatory expertise and buyer network, he said the firm can bring these volumes to obligated parties, adding that the company is excited to be an early mover in a market it believes will have an increasingly important role in the European and global energy mix.

TURN2X Eyes Scale-Up Beyond 1 TWh

Benedikt Stolz, Managing Director of TURN2X, said the company is proud to partner with STX Group and its extensive trading expertise to bring certified e-Methane from its first commercial plant into key markets across Europe.

According to Stolz, TURN2X's load-flexible methanation technology allows the company to produce e-Methane at a competitive cost, and the firm looks forward to scaling up supply to over 1 TWh in the coming years.

Early-Mover Positioning in a Scarce Market

The announcement underscores the scarcity of certified RFNBO supply currently available in the market, a factor both companies cited as central to the partnership's rationale.

STX Group positions the offtake as the foundation for a broader RFNBO portfolio, while TURN2X gains a route to market for output from its first commercial facility as it pursues future commercial-scale projects alongside its new trading partner.
