Microsoft Purchases 28,900 Tonnes of Carbon Removal from UNDO with Pioneering Debt Financing from Inlandsis
Microsoft has purchased 28,900 tonnes of permanent carbon removal from UNDO, supported by pioneering debt financing from Inlandsis, a Canadian climate fund managed by Fondaction Asset Management. Following 5,000 tonnes in 2023 and 15,000 tonnes in 2024, this third purchase brings Microsoft's total commitment with UNDO to nearly 49,000 tonnes.
Industry-First Financing Structure
This deal represents an industry first, with Inlandsis providing a novel financing structure that supplies the capital needed to fully deliver on this purchase, with the scope to scale further high-integrity enhanced rock weathering (ERW) projects globally. The financing is designed to achieve the gigatonne-scale carbon removal needed to keep warming below 1.5 °C, requiring not just science but also scalable finance.
Progressive Partnership with Microsoft
The relationship between Microsoft and UNDO has grown season by season. In 2023, Microsoft made its first-ever ERW purchase with a 5,000-tonne contract. In 2024, Microsoft followed with 15,000 tonnes and funding for vital science. Today's agreement for 28,900 tonnes is the biggest yet, reflecting evidence-led growth, increased confidence in ERW, and trust in delivery that holds up to scrutiny.
