Microsoft Plans to Buy More than 200 Acres of Land in Ohio to Develop Data Center Facilities

Last Updated on 03rd January 2024

Microsoft is planning to purchase over 200 acres of land in Hebron and Union Township, Ohio, for the development of six data center buildings. The land consists of two parcels in western Ohio (Parcel 79), divided by a village-township line along Canyon Road. Approval is expected in 2024, with construction set to commence in late 2024 or early 2025.

Jim Layton, the mayor of Hebron, has announced that Microsoft intends to construct six data center buildings on these parcels. Each building is expected to accommodate a workforce of 50 to 75 individuals and will be completed in phases over approximately ten years.

Ohio Data Center Market

The Ohio data center market is booming, with Columbus emerging as a major hub for data storage and processing. Compared to other major data center hubs, land prices in Ohio are relatively more affordable, attracting developers and operators.

Over the past decade, Ohio has seen significant growth in data center space, particularly in Central Ohio. Columbus alone added 2.7 million square feet of data center space between 2012 and 2021, making it the third-highest such expansion in the US.

Tech giants like Amazon, Google, and Facebook have established a significant data center presence in Ohio, particularly in New Albany. Recent investments include Amazon's USD 3.5 billion commitment to five new data centers and Google's USD 1.7 billion expansion in New Albany.
