Lithuania Has Chosen The Location For A 700 MW Offshore Wind Farm

Last Updated on 08th January 2024

The Lithuanian government has chosen the area for the building of a wind farm with a capacity of up to 700MW off the coast of Lithuania. The site, which is around 29 kilometers from the shore, comprises 137.5 square kilometers and has average sea depths of 35 meters. The wind farm, which is expected to be ready by 2030, will generate between 2.5 and 3 TWh of electricity per year.

According to the authorities, the average wind speed in the area is around nine meters per second. In February 2023, a tender for the development and operation of the wind project will be held. The Lithuanian Energy Agency will conduct a strategic environmental assessment and an environmental impact assessment for the project before issuing the tender. The government has also accepted the Ministry of Energy's idea for the deployment of wind turbines in Lithuania's Marine Territories.

Zygimantas Vaiciunas, the minister of energy, said "Our goal is to develop offshore wind in the most efficient and competitive way, and this will also be an opportunity to attract world-class investors to Lithuanian energy,"
