LichtBlick has commenced construction this week on its first large-scale battery storage facility in Röhrsdorf near Chemnitz, marking a significant 100 million euro green investment in Germany's energy infrastructure. The project represents one of the largest storage initiatives in the MITNETZ Strom distribution network area.

Technical Specifications and Timeline

The facility will feature approximately 100 megawatts of power capacity with a storage depth of four hours, utilizing 84 battery storage containers from technology partner Fluence. Each container provides up to 5.6 megawatt-hours of capacity. Construction is scheduled to be completed over 18 months, with commissioning planned for the first quarter of 2027.

The battery energy storage system will be constructed on a commercial area within the city and will connect to MITNETZ STROM's 110-kilovolt high-voltage network. The project development to construction readiness was handled by Munich-based firm ENERGISTO eG, with whom LichtBlick established the joint venture GigaCharge for large-scale battery storage development in 2024.

Strategic Partnerships and Market Position

Dr. Enno Wolf, COO of LichtBlick, emphasized the facility's role in grid stability, stating that large battery storage systems are “a key component for tomorrow's energy system.” He noted that the high storage depth of four hours enables a flexible response to future power system requirements, directly contributing to network stability and advancing decentralized flexibility in capacity expansion in Germany.

Fluence Energy serves as the primary technology partner for the project. Markus Meyer, Managing Director of Fluence Energy GmbH, described the Röhrsdorf project as “an excellent example of how innovative large battery storage can strengthen supply security and flexibility in the energy system.” He positioned the project as demonstrating the crucial role of targeted storage capacity expansion for renewable energy integration and as a model for additional projects in Germany and Europe.

Energy Trading and Commercial Operations

Eneco Energy Trade, the trading arm of LichtBlick's parent company Eneco, will handle energy trading operations for the Hamburg-based company. Eneco currently leads the flexibility marketing sector in Belgium and the Netherlands with approximately 950 megawatts of contractually bound battery capacity. In Germany, Eneco has been marketing battery capacity since 2018 through its EnspireME battery facility in Schleswig-Holstein.

The company also provides third-party services in Germany through tolling or market index contracts. Kees-Jan Rameau, Chairman of LichtBlick's Board of Directors and CEO of Dutch energy group Eneco, highlighted the project's significance as the largest battery storage facility in Eneco's portfolio. He emphasized that the energy transition requires substantial flexible capacity and noted that the large battery storage system benefits both regional grid stability and enables better utilization of sustainably generated electricity for residents throughout Germany.

Regional Support and Environmental Goals

The city of Chemnitz has expressed strong support for the battery storage project as part of regional energy transition efforts. Knut Kunze, Mayor and Head of the Department for Law, Security and Environmental Protection for the City of Chemnitz, emphasized that expanding renewable energy forms an essential foundation for achieving climate neutrality, which Chemnitz has targeted by 2040.

Kunze noted that achieving this goal requires adequate power lines and sufficient storage facilities to optimally utilize generated green energy, leading to the city's explicit endorsement of the large battery storage investment. Steffen Zerge, Head of the South Saxony Network Region at MITNETZ STROM, characterized high-performance energy storage as “a booster for the energy transition.”

As the distribution network operator, MITNETZ STROM will contribute to the project's success by connecting the planned electricity storage facility to their 110-kilovolt high-voltage network. The facility's location in a commercial area near Chemnitz strategically positions it within the regional energy infrastructure, supporting Germany's broader renewable energy integration objectives through enhanced grid flexibility and storage capabilities.
