Foundation Laid for World’s Largest Hybrid Renewable Energy Park with 30 GW Capacity in Gujarat

Last Updated on 08th January 2024

On December 15, 2020, the construction of a mega park, which will generate 30 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy and be the world's largest renewable energy plant was officially launched by India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Hybrid Renewable Energy Park will be constructed with a capital investment of INR 1.5 lakh crore (USD 2 billion). It is located near Vighakot village in the district of Kutch in Gujarat.

The vast project in the Kutch region of western Gujarat, which covers an area of 72,600 hectares (180,000 acres)—the size of Singapore—will include solar panels, solar energy storage units and windmills.

Mr. Modi has also laid the foundation for a desalination plant in Mandvi, Gujarat. The desalination plant will be able to treat 100 million litres of water a day for 800,000 people living in the arid zone bordering Pakistan.

The energy project in Gujarat would account for a significant part of India's ambitious goal of producing 175 GW of renewable energy by 2022 and 450 GW by 2030.  It also reduces carbon dioxide emissions up to 50 million tonnes per year.

The Prime Minister said "This park will be bigger than India's biggest metro cities. It will produce power using the energy of the Sun and the wind, the mega project will not only help in better usage of a vast area of the desert but also helps in securing the border”, On speaking of this the Prime Minister also mentioned that, “This project will also be an achievement of the goal to reduce the electricity bill of the common man. Mostly, it will reduce pollution and protect our environment. The electricity generated by this park would prevent the emission of five crore tonnes of carbon dioxide. This will be equal to planting nine crore trees”.

The Prime Minister also added, “This hybrid renewable energy park is as large as the country of Singapore and Bahrain. You can have an idea as to how big this is going to be. It will create huge employment opportunities for almost one lakh crore of people and the youth will benefit.”
