Kerala Plans to Invest Around $1.5 Billion for Its Green Hydrogen Valley and Green Transport Corridor

The state of Kerala has allocated over USD 1.4 billion for its green transport corridor and approximately USD 10 million for phase 1 of the green hydrogen valley project. The state plans to utilize the allocated budget of USD 10 million to establish Hydrogen Valley platforms. Furthermore, the state plans to construct two green hydrogen valleys in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram.

The proposal for the Kochi Valley has been submitted to the Department of Science and Technology (DST), while the preparation of the proposal for the Vizhinjam project is ongoing. Under the ‘Mission Innovation’ initiative, the DST has invited proposals from agencies to establish hydrogen valleys. Mission Innovation is a global initiative involving 23 countries and the European Commission to catalyze action and investment in research.

Kerala also aims to transform its major transport corridors into green economic trade corridors. For the green transport corridor, Kerala plans to invest around USD 780 million in the coastal highway project and USD 420 million in the hill highway project.

 

 

In addition to integrating green hydrogen valleys and floating solar power projects, the government intends to build a network of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles and hydrogen-powered vehicles along the Vizhinjam to Kochi corridor.

The Kerala state government has declared its intention to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The state government has formulated a strategy to reduce carbon emissions across multiple sectors by implementing green hydrogen, and electric vehicle initiatives.

 

The public-sector shipyard Cochin Shipyard intends to construct vessels powered by fuel cells for inland waterways. A multitude of pilot initiatives are in the works, encompassing the construction of hydrogen storage facilities in port regions, hydrogen refueling stations, and ammonia production facilities, among others. Cochin Shipyard Limited is engaged in ammonia-related endeavors as well. 

 

IIT Madras, Ashok Leyland, and Bosch are collaborating to develop methanol as a diesel substitute, a development that will aid the state's overarching decarbonization objectives. Kerala is strategizing the construction of hydrogen valleys in specific cities, mirroring the green hydrogen initiatives that have been initiated in the Netherlands. In addition, fuel-cell trains are being organized throughout the state. Municipal governments throughout the nation should consider the utilization of municipal waste as a fuel source for hydrogen generation in their cities. 

 

The state government has provided a viability gap funding provision of INR 10 million for the purchase of ten hydrogen fuel cell-powered feeder buses for the Kochi Metro and airport services.
