NTPC Green Energy Limited has issued an engineering, procurement, and construction tender for a 250 MW/1,000 MWh battery energy storage system at its Kayamkulam facility in Kerala, aiming to enhance grid stability and support the state's clean energy goals by addressing the intermittency of solar and wind power.
The project, set to be developed in two equal blocks of 125 MW/500 MWh, will significantly contribute to Kerala's move towards net-zero emissions. This initiative is part of the state's effort to integrate more renewable energy into the grid, provide peak load management, and reduce reliance on polluting peaker plants.
Project Overview
The 1,000 MWh battery energy storage system will have a storage capacity capable of powering tens of thousands of homes for hours, making it a critical step in Kerala's renewable energy reliability. Block-1 of the project will be connected to the site's existing 33 kV solar pooling switchgear, while Block-2 will interface with the higher-voltage 220 kV switchyard, reinforcing Kerala's transmission capabilities across multiple voltage tiers.
This setup will ensure a robust and efficient energy storage solution. The project's design and implementation will play a crucial role in its success, with the EPC scope including design, engineering, supply, transport, installation, testing, and commissioning.
Technical Specifications
The technical specifications of the project are designed to ensure maximum efficiency and reliability. The 250 MW/1,000 MWh battery energy storage system will be developed using advanced technology, with a focus on safety, performance, and durability. The system's ability to store large amounts of energy will enable it to provide power during periods of high demand, reducing the strain on the grid and minimizing the need for polluting peaker plants.
The project's technical requirements are stringent, with a focus on ensuring seamless integration with the existing grid infrastructure. The EPC contractor will be responsible for ensuring that the system meets all technical specifications and is commissioned within the stipulated timeframe. The contractor will also be required to provide training and support to ensure smooth operation and maintenance of the system.
