JERA Co., Inc., Japan's largest power producer, announced the signing of a Strategic Partnering Agreement with the Office of the Governor of the State of Hawaii to support Hawaii's decarbonization goals and energy transition. The agreement was signed on October 6, 2025, at JERA's Tokyo headquarters by Governor Josh Green and JERA Global CEO Yukio Kani, marking a new step in Hawaii-Japan collaboration on energy partnership and future-oriented development.
Partnership Framework and Objectives
The Strategic Partnering Agreement establishes a framework for long-term collaboration among JERA Co., Inc., its U.S. subsidiary JERA Americas Inc., and the State of Hawaii. The partnership focuses on fuel diversity and developing pathways toward decarbonization for the island state. The collaboration is designed to help realize the Hawaii State Energy Office's Alternative Fuels, Repowering and Energy Transition Study, which was published in January 2025.
The study concluded that in the short term, the state should accelerate its shift away from oil by using affordable and reliable alternative fuels, including natural gas.
