Iran is undergoing a significant transformation in its energy landscape, moving towards a more sustainable future by combining solar power with hydroelectric energy. The country's first floating photovoltaic power plant was inaugurated at the Mahabad Petrochemical Plant in August 2020. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to expand renewable energy capacity and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Energy Strategy

The government's plan involves constructing solar power plants adjacent to hydroelectric dams, leveraging Iran's natural resources and existing infrastructure. This approach aims to improve grid stability, reduce carbon emissions, and achieve ambitious energy goals. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been signed with the Iranian Renewable Energy and Electricity Efficiency Organization (SATBA) to build solar power plants at strategic dam sites.

Renewable Energy Potential

Iran has an abundance of renewable resources, including solar, wind, biomass, and geothermal energy. The goal is to generate 500 megawatts of new solar capacity, contributing to the country's broader renewable energy targets. Solar power is particularly promising due to Iran's high number of sunny days, providing a reliable and sustainable energy source.

Floating Solar Power

Iran is also exploring floating solar power plants, utilizing its extensive network of dams and reservoirs as potential sites. A pilot project has been launched at Mahabad Petrochemical Company, demonstrating the country's growing expertise in renewable energy. This approach eliminates the need for expensive land and reduces water evaporation from reservoirs, while also improving solar panel efficiency.

The environmental and economic benefits of floating solar power make it an attractive solution for Iran's growing energy demands, and the country is likely to continue developing this technology in the future. By positioning solar panels on bodies of water, Iran can significantly reduce water evaporation from its reservoirs. This not only helps conserve vital water resources but also improves the overall efficiency of the solar panels, as the cooling effect from the water can boost their performance by 5 to 10 percent.
