PT HDF Energy Indonesia and PT Pertamina New & Renewable Energy have signed a Joint Study Development Agreement to co-develop renewable energy projects in selected districts of Indonesia, the two companies announced on September 10, 2026, in Jakarta.

The agreement grants reciprocal exclusivity covering projects in designated areas of East Nusa Tenggara and Papua, two of Indonesia's most remote and energy-vulnerable regions.

Terms of the Agreement

The Joint Study Development Agreement establishes the framework for project development and renewable power generation across Indonesia. Under its terms, the two companies will jointly develop renewable energy projects incorporating green hydrogen and battery storage, as well as green hydrogen-to-power projects.

The agreement also covers the continued development of HDF Energy's existing pipeline of Renewstable projects already underway in Eastern Indonesia.

Beyond power generation, the collaboration will explore additional applications for hydrogen, including opportunities to support industries where hydrogen can deliver added value, with the stated aim of contributing to the emergence of a broader hydrogen ecosystem in Indonesia.

The Renewable Technology

At the center of the partnership is HDF Energy's Renewstable technology, which combines intermittent renewable energy sources, either solar or wind, with substantial on-site energy storage in the form of green hydrogen. The resulting output is described by the company as clean, stable, baseload power delivered around the clock.

The technology is designed specifically for the conditions found in Indonesia's remote and island regions, where electricity generation continues to rely heavily on imported diesel fuel.

By replacing diesel-dependent generation with hydrogen-backed renewable power, Renewstable plants are positioned to support energy sovereignty and decarbonization while providing local communities with more reliable and sustainable access to electricity.

Strategic Rationale for Both Partners

For HDF Energy, the agreement deepens the presence in Indonesia that the company first established in 2020. The partnership brings together HDF Energy's technical expertise in hydrogen-based power with Pertamina NRE's capabilities and strategic position within Indonesia's broader energy sector.

Mathieu Gèze, Director for Asia-Pacific at HDF Energy and President Director of PT HDF Energy Indonesia, described the agreement as a major step forward for the development of Renewstable plants in the country.

"It brings together HDF Energy's expertise in hydrogen-based power with Pertamina NRE's capabilities and strategic position in Indonesia's energy sector, giving us a stronger platform to bring reliable, 24/7 renewable power to island communities that depend on diesel today," he said.

John Anis, CEO of Pertamina NRE, said the agreement marks an important step in advancing renewable energy and green hydrogen projects in Indonesia. "Through this partnership, we aim to accelerate the development of reliable and sustainable energy solutions while supporting the growth of Indonesia's local hydrogen ecosystem and contributing to a more resilient and cleaner energy future," he said.

Indonesia's Energy Transition Context

The agreement is framed by both parties as aligned with Indonesia's broader energy transition goals. The country's remote and island regions present a particular challenge for decarbonization, given their current dependence on diesel-fueled generation and the logistical difficulties of connecting them to larger grid infrastructure.

The Renewstable model, which generates and stores energy on-site using locally produced green hydrogen, is intended to address both the reliability and emissions dimensions of that challenge.

East Nusa Tenggara and Papua, the two regions specifically named in the exclusivity provisions of the agreement, are among the areas in Indonesia where energy access remains most constrained and where the continued reliance on diesel carries the greatest economic and environmental cost.
