Singapore-based renewable energy developer Gurin Energy has selected Saft, a subsidiary of TotalEnergies, to supply a 1 gigawatt-hour (GWh) battery energy storage system (BESS) for a major project in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. This initiative aims to enhance grid stability and support Japan's renewable energy targets.

The BESS will be integrated into Gurin Energy's standalone energy storage project in Soma City, Fukushima Prefecture. The system is designed to provide over 240 megawatts of power for four hours, contributing to a more resilient and flexible electricity grid. Construction is scheduled to commence in 2026.

This project aligns with Japan's national objectives to increase the share of renewable energy in its electricity mix to 36–38% by 2030 and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. By incorporating large-scale energy storage, Japan aims to mitigate the curtailment of renewable energy and ensure a stable power supply.

Partnership and Strategic Importance

Vincent Le Quintrec, Saft's Sales and Marketing Director for Energy Storage Systems, emphasized Asia's significance for Saft's long-term growth. Ushio Okuyama, Country Manager for Japan at Gurin Energy, highlighted that the project will significantly enhance the flexibility of local, regional, and national power grids. Both companies are committed to accelerating the energy transition in Asia through this collaboration.
