Grenergy Secures 12-Year Financial Tolling Agreement for Escuderos Hybrid Project
Grenergy (independent renewable energy) has signed a 12-year financial tolling agreement covering the battery energy storage system of its Escuderos hybrid project in Castilla-La Mancha, Spain, with an international utility that holds an Investment Grade credit rating from both Moody's and Standard & Poor's.
Deal Structure and Timeline
The agreement will come into force in July 2028, with Grenergy retaining responsibility for the operation and trading management of the batteries throughout the contract period.
The counterparty has not been named publicly, identified only as an international utility carrying Investment Grade ratings from both major credit rating agencies.
The financial tolling agreement for the storage portion of Escuderos sits alongside an existing daytime power purchase agreement signed with Galp in 2020, also covering a 12-year term, which applies to the solar generation side of the same hybrid plant.
Together, the two contracts provide long-term revenue coverage across both components of the project.

Escuderos Project Specifications
The Escuderos complex is designed to combine 200 megawatts of solar photovoltaic capacity with 680 megawatt-hours of battery energy storage. Construction of the battery storage system is scheduled to begin in the second half of this year, with commissioning targeted for 2027. Grenergy describes Escuderos as its flagship hybridization project in Spain.
The project represents what Grenergy characterizes as the beginning of a broader hybrid portfolio push in the Spanish market, with the company stating its intention to develop further hybrid projects in the country following the establishment of Escuderos.

Second Financial Tolling Agreement in Spain
The Escuderos deal is the second financial tolling agreement Grenergy has signed in Spain. The first was executed in February of this year for its stand-alone battery project in Oviedo, which was also concluded with an international utility rated Investment Grade by Moody's.
That earlier agreement ran for a 10-year term, according to previously published company announcements. The Oviedo project sits under Grenergy's Greenbox platform, which the company describes as its stand-alone battery platform in Europe and a separate strategic pillar from its hybrid project development.
Replicating the Chile Model in Spain
Grenergy is positioning Escuderos as the Spanish equivalent of the hybridization model it has developed in Chile through two large-scale platforms. The first, Oasis de Atacama, currently has a capacity of 2 gigawatts of solar and 11 gigawatt-hours of storage, with completion expected in 2027 and a total investment of USD 2.346 billion.
The second, Oasis Central, is projected to reach 1.1 gigawatts of solar and 4 gigawatt-hours of storage, with an estimated investment of USD 1.05 billion.
David Ruiz de Andrés, chief executive of Grenergy, described Escuderos as the beginning of a new stage for the company in Spain. "It is our first major hybrid project in the country, and more will follow," he said.
"We see enormous potential in the Spanish market to continue developing a hybrid portfolio, building on the experience and track record we have already established in Chile with the Oasis platforms."
Company Profile and Global Portfolio
Grenergy was founded in 2007, and the company currently carries a market capitalization of more than USD 4.10 billion and employs more than 600 people across operations in three regions: Europe, covering Spain, Italy, Germany, Poland, Romania, and the United Kingdom; North America, covering the United States; and Latin America, covering Chile, Peru, Mexico, and Colombia.
The company's global portfolio spans 12 gigawatts of solar capacity and 75 gigawatt-hours of storage capacity at various stages of development. Grenergy develops, builds, and operates solar photovoltaic plants and describes itself as a pioneer in the energy storage industry.
Broader Strategic Context
The Escuderos financial tolling agreement is the latest in a series of contract and financing announcements Grenergy has made in recent months. Earlier this year, the company secured 355 million dollars in financing for its Central Oasis platform in Chile and signed a 20-year solar contract for its Fibden hybrid project in the United Kingdom. In January, it secured capacity contracts for 2.1 gigawatt-hours of stand-alone storage projects in Poland.
With the Escuderos agreement now in place, Grenergy has established contracted revenue arrangements across both the generation and storage components of its first major Spanish hybrid project, covering the period from the plant's anticipated commissioning date through the mid-2030s.
