GenusPlus Wins Construction Contract for 200 MW Koolunga Battery Project in South Australia
West Australian construction company GenusPlus Group has been awarded the engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning EPC contract for the 200 megawatt, 800 megawatt-hour Koolunga battery energy storage system in South Australia, adding another major project to the state's rapidly expanding grid-scale storage pipeline.
Project Details and Location
The Koolunga battery energy storage system is being developed by Singaporean developer Equis Development and will be located in the town of Koolunga, approximately 180 kilometers north of Adelaide.
The project carries a nameplate capacity of 200 megawatts and will store 800 megawatt-hours of energy, providing four hours of continuous output at full capacity.
Once operational, the battery will connect to South Australia's electricity grid through a 1.2-kilometer high-voltage cable linked to the 275-kilovolt Brinkworth Substation.

Scope of the Contract
GenusPlus Group confirmed it has secured the contract covering the Balance of Plant scope as well as the full installation of the Koolunga battery energy storage system.
The contract encompasses engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning responsibilities. Construction is expected to take up to 18 months, with works scheduled to begin shortly and targeted for completion by September 2027.
The physical footprint of the project will be substantial, consisting of up to 640 battery containers spread across approximately 1.8 hectares of land.

Jobs and Economic Impact
The project is expected to create up to 115 jobs during the construction phase, along with five ongoing operational positions once the facility is complete and running. David Riches, managing director of GenusPlus, described the contract as a significant milestone for the company.
"This is a milestone project for Genus," Riches said. "This contract gives us great confidence that the market sees our capability and capacity to deliver a project of this size and complexity. We look forward to working closely with Equis to deliver the project safely, successfully, and on time."
South Australia's Battery Buildout
The Koolunga project is one of nearly a dozen large-scale battery projects currently under construction in South Australia. The state has set a target of reaching 100 percent net renewables by the end of next year and is currently sourcing an average of 75 percent of its grid demand from wind and solar, a level of renewable penetration that is already being supported by several big batteries already in operation across the state.
The awarding of the Koolunga construction contract reflects the continued momentum behind battery storage investment in South Australia as the state works to firm up its growing renewable energy supply and manage the variability that comes with high levels of wind and solar generation on the grid.
