Eku Energy, a global energy storage specialist, has announced its entry into the German market with the acquisition of a 400 megawatt / 1,600 megawatt-hour battery energy storage system in the municipality of Lamspringe in Lower Saxony, marking the company's sixth global market expansion.

A Record-Scale Project for Germany

The project, named Dion BESS, is described by the company as the largest battery energy storage system of its kind in Germany. Beyond its scale, the facility will provide black-start capability through a direct connection to the transmission grid, a feature the company says will support faster and more reliable grid recovery during outages and enhance energy security in the region. The project is currently in an advanced development stage, with commissioning planned for the end of 2029.

Black-start capability refers to the ability of a power asset to restart without relying on an external electrical supply, making it a critical function for grid resilience in the event of widespread outages. Eku Energy states that the Dion BESS will contribute to energy security in Germany while delivering broader grid services.

Partnership Structure and Development Agreement

To bring the project to fruition, Eku Energy has entered into a Development Services Agreement with NION, the local developer behind the Dion BESS project. Under the terms of that agreement, NION will retain responsibility for further project development through to the Ready to Build stage, while Eku Energy assumes strategic leadership across development, design, and technology.

Eku Energy will also work with Fluence, identified as a long-standing lithium iron phosphate supply partner, throughout the project's development phase. Lithium iron phosphate, or LiFePO4, is a battery chemistry commonly used in large-scale grid storage applications due to its thermal stability and cycle life characteristics.

Commercial Strategy and Revenue Model

Eku Energy's Chief Financial Officer, Erin Lee, outlined the company's commercial approach in a statement accompanying the announcement. "Eku Energy's core strength lies in combining technological expertise with deep commercialisation experience," Lee said.

"In our multi-use projects, we combine long-term offtake agreements with the participation of our battery assets in power exchange markets. This expertise in contracts and storage technology delivers greater revenue resilience and visibility for our projects."

The multi-use model the company references involves generating revenue both through structured long-term contracts and through active participation in electricity market trading, a combination the company says improves the financial stability of its projects over time.

Long-Term Portfolio Ambitions in Germany

The Dion BESS acquisition is positioned by the company as the first step in a broader German market strategy. Eku Energy has announced plans to open a dedicated office in Germany in 2027, signalling an intent to build a sustained presence in one of Europe's largest energy markets rather than treating the country as a single-project opportunity.

The company states it is looking to develop a long-term project pipeline in Germany and is actively seeking new partnerships across the energy value chain, with a particular focus on energy storage projects and long-term power offtake and commercialisation arrangements.

Eku Energy's stated investment philosophy emphasises long-term ownership. The company says it is fully committed to developing, building, and operating its projects with the aim of retaining them in its portfolio over the long term, rather than divesting once construction is complete. This infrastructure-oriented approach is presented as central to how the company mobilises capital for energy system transformation.

Global Footprint and Ownership Structure

Germany represents the sixth market in which Eku Energy operates. The company currently has over 25 gigawatt-hours of projects in delivery across Australia, Japan, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and Italy. The addition of Germany extends that geographic reach into continental Europe beyond its existing Italian operations.

Eku Energy is jointly owned by two major institutional investors. The British Columbia Investment Management Corporation, described as one of Canada's largest institutional investors, holds a stake alongside a fund managed by Macquarie Asset Management, one of the world's leading asset managers with approximately USD 722 billion in assets under management. The ownership structure reflects the company's positioning as a long-term infrastructure investor backed by large-scale institutional capital.
