Gas transmission company Gasgrid has issued Finland's first-ever guarantees of origin for hydrogen. These guarantees were issued to P2X Solutions for renewable hydrogen produced at its Harjavalta plant.
A guarantee of origin is the only way to demonstrate to the market that gas has been produced from renewable energy sources. According to Janne Grönlund, Head of Gas Business at Gasgrid, and Sara Kärki, Head of Hydrogen Development at Gasgrid, this represents “a historic and concrete step in the commercial utilization of hydrogen gas, demonstrating the progress of the hydrogen economy.” They noted that the guarantee of origin also strengthens confidence in the traceability of renewable hydrogen.
P2X Solutions' Industrial-Scale Green Hydrogen Plant
P2X Solutions inaugurated Finland's first industrial-scale green hydrogen production plant in Harjavalta in spring 2025, where hydrogen is produced with clean renewable energy. Herkko Plit, CEO of P2X Solutions, stated that he believes “the guarantee of origin granted to us is a clear competitive advantage in the future hydrogen market, and we want to be a pioneer in this area as well.”
P2X Solutions, described as a producer of green hydrogen and a pioneer in Power-to-X technology, registered with Gasgrid's gas guarantee of origin system in December 2024 and has now applied for its first hydrogen guarantees of origin.
Market Demand and Carbon Neutrality Goals
Service Manager Heli Haapea at Gasgrid, who is developing the system for guarantees of origin, explained that there is demand for them because renewable gases play a significant role in achieving Finland's and Europe's carbon-neutrality goals. The guarantee of origin proves that clean gases, such as hydrogen, are produced from renewable energy sources.
Haapea emphasized that without guarantees of origin, gas producers cannot sell or market gas as renewable. She noted that “the first guarantees of origin for hydrogen are not only significant for hydrogen but also take the entire clean gas sector forward towards a more open, traceable, and sustainable market.” According to Haapea, with guarantees of origin, “we are building a sustainable and reliable foundation for the use of all clean gases”.

Gasgrid's Role and Authority
In Finland, the gas transmission company Gasgrid acts as the administrator of the gas guarantee of origin register and the issuer of guarantees of origin. Gasgrid is authorized to issue both national and European guarantees of origin to gas and hydrogen production facilities in Finland.
A guarantee of origin is defined as the only way to ensure that clean gases, such as hydrogen, synthetic methane, and biogas, are produced from renewable energy sources. The guarantee of origin is an electronic document that serves as proof to the end user that a specific share or amount of energy has been produced from renewable sources.
Finland's Leadership in Clean Gas Market
Gasgrid has been issuing guarantees of origin for biogas for almost four years, during which time the market for renewable gases has grown enormously. The guarantee of origin register and systems have been developed so that Gasgrid is ready to issue guarantees of origin for biogas, e-methane, and hydrogen.
Haapea indicated that development work is continuing to enable the market for all clean gases to develop, and they are currently preparing for the first guarantees of origin for e-methane. According to Haapea, Finland is at the forefront of European countries in issuing guarantees of origin and in the clean gas market.
Of the other European countries that maintain a guarantee of origin register, at least Spain, in addition to Finland, has also granted guarantees for hydrogen. However, Finland is likely to be the first country in Europe to grant guarantees of origin for synthetic methane, according to Haapea.
Janne Grönlund emphasized that Europe-wide cooperation in the renewable gas market is essential. He stated that “the goal is to harmonize the operating practices of the European internal market in order to secure the development of the commercial availability of renewable and low-carbon gases.” Grönlund noted that consistent and harmonized operating practices and widely used commercial information systems will support the market for clean gases in the long term.
Gasgrid's vision is described as “Gases enable a carbon-neutral society – we provide the platform for it,” a goal Grönlund said they are determinedly pursuing. At
Gasgrid develops systems according to their customers' needs.
Gasgrid is described as a multi-gas company of the future providing energy transmission system solutions to promote a clean transition and an energy-efficient society. The company strengthens Finland's economic growth, security of supply, and energy independence, and supports the balancing power required for emission-free electricity production. Through international infrastructure projects, Gasgrid is preparing to meet the demand for clean gas energy in Europe as well.
