Etana Energy, a leading energy trader in South Africa, has reached financial close with global renewables group ACCIONA Energía on two wind farms with a combined capacity of 190MW in the Western Cape. Under the agreement, Etana Energy will purchase all renewable electricity generated from the facilities for the first 20 years of operation.

Project Details and Location

The project comprises two wind farms: the Zen wind farm with 100MW capacity and the Bergrivier wind farm with 94MW capacity. Both facilities are located between Gouda and Saron in the Western Cape and will produce approximately 580GWh of renewable electricity annually.

Financial close was achieved on December 12, 2025, with construction expected to commence in the coming weeks. The wind farms are scheduled for commissioning in mid-2027.

Ownership Structure and Customer Base

The wind farms will be owned by ACCIONA Energía, which holds a 51% stake, and a joint venture between H1 Capital and Chariot Limited, which owns the remaining 49%. The low-carbon energy generated will be supplied to Etana's customers, including Growthpoint, the V&A Waterfront, Tharisa Minerals, Petra Diamonds, and Autocast.

Environmental Impact and Company Portfolio

The electricity supplied through these projects will displace around 600,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year, which is equivalent to removing more than 225,000 internal combustion engine vehicles from the road.

According to Evan Rice, CEO of Etana Energy, "These wind projects are another key piece of the puzzle for Etana to provide businesses with renewable energy to cover a high percentage of their total electricity needs. This brings Etana's generation portfolio to around 300MW of wind and solar projects under construction, alongside the operational Boston Hydro facility, all with fully contracted customer offtake."

Rice also noted strong interest from South African businesses in cost-competitive clean power and the contractual flexibility of Etana's offerings. He stated that "a significant portion of our next phase of wind and solar projects is already committed to our growing portfolio of customers, and our focus is now on taking these projects into construction in the coming months."
