Equinor Receives Approval To Start Troll Phase 3.

Last Updated on 08th January 2024

The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) has given Equinor and its licensing partners permission to commission the Troll phase 3 project in the North Sea offshore Norway.

Troll phase 3 is an extension of the Troll field, which is located 60 kilometers west of Sognefjorden in the Norwegian North Sea at a depth of 300 meters.

Equinor and its partners chose a development solution that includes two subsea templates and eight gas wells connected to the Troll A platform. The well stream is channeled to Troll A by new 36-inch tubing, where it is compressed and exported using existing infrastructure.

Troll's phase 3 recoverable reserves, mostly gas, are expected to be at 2.2 billion barrels of oil equivalent (350 million standard cubic meters).

Licensees have invested slightly over NOK 8 billion (USD 924 million) in Troll's phase 3, according to NPD, with the goal of it producing for at least 30 years.

Wenche Tjelta Johansen, License Management Leader at the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate, said "Troll is a giant on the Norwegian shelf. The field supplies up to 7 percent of Europe's daily gas demand, and Troll's phase 3 will help maintain a high level of production for a long time."

The Troll field was discovered in 1979 and developed in two phases, with gas extracted from Troll Øst in the first phase and oil extracted from Troll Vest in the second.
