EDP Renewables North America and the Redwood Coast Energy Authority have completed construction of the Sandrini Energy Storage project, a 92 megawatt/368 megawatt-hour battery energy storage system located in Kern County, California.
The facility, which carries the capacity to power the equivalent of more than 22,000 California homes, marks another step in the build-out of large-scale storage infrastructure along the state's southern interior.
Project Details and Co-Location Arrangement
The Sandrini Energy Storage system sits adjacent to the 300 MW Sandrini Solar energy site in Kern County, making it part of a broader co-located renewable and storage campus.
The Redwood Coast Energy Authority, a local government joint powers agency headquartered in Humboldt County, is purchasing 100 MW from the Sandrini Solar facility and holds an energy storage service agreement covering 100 percent of the battery capacity at the new storage site.
The battery system is designed to strengthen grid reliability and deliver renewable power during periods of peak demand, a critical function as California works to decarbonize its electricity supply while managing the intermittent nature of solar generation.
The co-location of storage with solar generation is intended to allow energy captured during daylight hours to be dispatched when customers need it most, extending the effective window of clean power delivery.

EDPR NA Chief Executive Officer Sandhya Ganapathy said the project reflects the company's broader mission of converting renewable generation into a dependable power supply.
"Energy storage transforms renewable power into reliable, around-the-clock electricity, ensuring clean energy is available when demand is highest," Ganapathy said. "Projects like Sandrini strengthen grid resilience, support economic growth, and help build a more affordable, dependable energy framework for California."
RCEA Executive Director Beth Burks said the storage project complements the authority's existing agreement with the Sandrini Solar facility. "The addition of the Sandrini Energy Storage project to our portfolio supports RCEA's goals of building new, clean capacity that matches our customers' energy needs and enhances the generation delivered by Sandrini Solar, while also supporting grid reliability," Burks said.
RCEA was established in 2003 and operates as a joint powers agency whose members include the Blue Lake Rancheria, the Yurok Tribe, the County of Humboldt, and the seven cities within the county.
Its mandate covers developing and implementing sustainable energy initiatives, increasing energy efficiency, and advancing the use of clean and renewable resources in the region.

Local Economic Impact
The Sandrini Energy Storage project is projected to generate more than five million dollars in revenue directed toward local public services and infrastructure, including schools, roads, emergency services and equipment, and parks. During construction, the storage project supported approximately 50 jobs.
When combined with the Sandrini Solar facility, the broader Sandrini Solar and Energy Storage campus supported approximately 250 jobs during construction and is expected to generate more than 25 million dollars in local tax revenue over the course of its operation.
EDPR NA's California Portfolio
The completion of Sandrini Energy Storage adds to what EDPR NA describes as approximately 1,230 MW of gross operating capacity across wind, solar, and energy storage in California, powering the equivalent of more than 485,000 homes in the state.
The company says its California projects have delivered approximately 154 million dollars in economic impact, including more than 41 million dollars in revenue for local governments, more than 33 million dollars in payments to landowners, and over 1,090 construction jobs.
EDPR NA's operating portfolio in California includes Lone Valley Solar at 30 MW, Rising Tree Wind at 198 MW, Windhub A Solar at 20 MW, Sandrini Solar and Energy Storage at 300 MW plus 92 MW of storage, and Scarlet Solar Energy and Energy Storage at 400 MW plus 190 MW of storage.
Recent Activity in Arizona
The Sandrini completion follows a separate milestone for EDPR NA in the Southwest. In June, the company inaugurated Flatland Energy Storage, a 200 MW / 800 MWh battery energy storage system located in Coolidge, Arizona.
That project was developed in partnership with Salt River Project, a not-for-profit public power utility serving more than two million people. Flatland Energy Storage carries the capacity to power the equivalent of approximately 44,500 Arizona homes.
