Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS), a nuclear energy company, has announced a landmark supply agreement with Fujikura Ltd (a global technology and electrical equipment manufacturer). under which it will purchase more than 10,000 km (3 GA-m) of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) tape, the raw material at the heart of the magnet technology the company plans to use in its Affordable, Robust, Compact (ARC) fusion power plants, which follow a nuclear fusion mechanism.
A Landmark Supply Agreement
The deal, announced on September 30, 2026, is described by both companies as the largest single purchase order of HTS tape ever placed and marks what CFS calls a key milestone for the ARC power plant supply chain.
The announcement was made jointly from Devens, Massachusetts, and Tokyo, underscoring the international character of the arrangement. Under the long-term supply agreement, Fujikura will invest in the expansion of its manufacturing capacity to enable the delivery of the HTS tape at the scale CFS requires.
The tape will be used in the development of ARC power plants, starting with the first grid-scale plant, which CFS is developing at the Fall Line Fusion Power Station in Chesterfield County, Virginia.
Positioning for Commercial Rollout
For CFS, the order is framed as a sign that the company is moving beyond research and development and into execution mode. Bob Mumgaard, CEO and co-founder of Commonwealth Fusion Systems, said the partnership demonstrates that the company is "actively placing orders and getting ready to execute our ARC power plant once our SPARC fusion machine achieves Q>1."SPARC is the company's marquee fusion project, designed to generate net energy and pave the way, in the company's words, for limitless carbon-free energy.
Mumgaard also emphasized the fit between the two companies, noting that CFS was pleased to find partners like Fujikura that understand its manufacturing priorities, share its sense of urgency, and are willing to make the investments necessary to help the company scale so that together they can meet future demand for fusion energy worldwide.
The supply agreement is described as a major milestone toward the construction of ARC power plants, and one that will help strengthen the industrial supply chain considered essential to bringing commercial fusion power to market.

Fujikura's Long-Term Bet on Fusion
For Fujikura, the agreement cements its role as a key supplier of HTS tape for ARC power plants and represents a wager on the commercialization timeline of fusion energy.
Naoki Okada, Representative Director, President, and CEO of Fujikura Ltd., said the agreement means the company will continue to strengthen its position as a key supplier of HTS tape for ARC power plants while building a long-term business platform for the 2030s and beyond, when commercial fusion power plants are expected to begin operation. Okada added that through these efforts, Fujikura aims to help support a sustainable energy future.
Fujikura Ltd., founded in 1885, is a global technology company with more than 100 group companies worldwide. The company has built its business on over a century of expertise in connectivity technologies, providing advanced solutions for optical communications, electronics, and automotive applications. Today it supports the rapid expansion of digital infrastructure and contributes to the development of next-generation energy technologies, including fusion energy.
U.S.-Japan Industrial Collaboration
Beyond its commercial significance, the deal is being presented as an important step in U.S.-Japan collaboration and in building the industrial ecosystem needed to support commercial fusion energy.
The pairing brings together the world's largest private fusion company, headquartered in Massachusetts, and a Japanese manufacturer with a 140-year history stretching back to 1885.
The agreement also highlights the growing importance of HTS tape as a strategic material for the emerging fusion industry. The superconducting tape is a crucial input for the magnet systems that will be used in CFS's ARC power plants, and securing more than 10,000 kilometers of it represents a substantial commitment by both buyer and supplier at a stage when commercial fusion plants have not yet begun operation.
About the Companies
Commonwealth Fusion Systems describes itself as the world's largest and leading private fusion company. Founded in 2018, the company has raised USD 4 billion in capital to date. Its SPARC machine is intended to generate net energy, demonstrating the physics and technology foundation for the commercial ARC power plants that follow. SPARC, ARC, and Fall Line Fusion Power Station are trademarks of Commonwealth Fusion Systems.
Fujikura, for its part, positions the agreement within a broader corporate strategy of supporting next-generation energy technologies. The company's leadership framed the deal as building a business platform that extends into the 2030s and beyond, aligning its manufacturing investment with the expected timeline for the first commercial fusion power plants to come online.
