Burckhardt Compression (reciprocating compressor manufacturer) has been selected by Norwegian green hydrogen company Hydrogen Solutions AS, known as HYDS, to supply high-pressure hydrogen compression solutions for a series of projects in development across the Nordic region, the companies announced on July 9, 2026.
Scope and Technical Specifications
The agreement covers compression solutions for projects with a planned production capacity of between 20 and 40 megawatts once operational. A central technical requirement of the scope is the delivery of systems capable of reaching pressures of up to 515 bar, a specification designed to enable the efficient filling of high-pressure tube trailers used for hydrogen transportation and distribution.
Burckhardt Compression's reciprocating compressor technology is described by the company as specifically engineered for high-pressure hydrogen applications, addressing requirements including gas purity, operational reliability, efficiency, and long-term durability. The company's hydrogen systems are currently deployed globally across production, storage, transportation, and refueling applications.
The execution of the deliveries remains subject to the finalization of customary agreements between the two companies.
Why Trailer Filling Pressure Matters in Early-Stage Markets
According to the announcement, achieving reliable compression to trailer filling pressure is considered essential to establishing a flexible and scalable hydrogen supply chain. This is particularly relevant during early market phases where pipeline infrastructure for hydrogen distribution remains limited.
Andreas Brautsch, President of the Systems Division at Burckhardt Compression, described hydrogen distribution as a critical enabler of a functioning hydrogen economy.
He said the company's technology allows hydrogen to be compressed safely and efficiently to 515 bar for trailer filling applications, providing HYDS with a means of transporting renewable hydrogen from production sites to end customers. Brautsch added that the company is proud to support what he called landmark projects and the broader expansion of hydrogen infrastructure in the Nordics.

Renewable Power and Decarbonization Targets
The projects being developed by HYDS are designed to be powered by renewable electricity. The hydrogen produced at these facilities is intended to support decarbonization efforts across the maritime, mobility, and industrial sectors. HYDS has framed this work as contributing to the Nordic region's broader ambition of building a sustainable hydrogen economy.
HYDS is developing the projects in collaboration with regional energy and industrial partners, though the announcement did not specify the identities of those partners.
HYDS on Supplier Selection
Frode Kirkedam, Chief Executive Officer of HYDS, emphasized the significance the company places on supplier quality when putting together a hydrogen production facility.
He stated that building a hydrogen production plant involves considerably more than installing equipment, and that the quality, reliability, and competence of suppliers have a direct impact on plant performance, project risk, safety, and long-term value creation.
Kirkedam said HYDS allocates considerable resources to selecting partners who not only deliver proven technology but who also share the company's commitment to quality, communication, and continuous support throughout the lifetime of a plant.
About the Two Companies
HYDS is a Norwegian green hydrogen company founded in 2021 that develops, builds, owns, and operates scalable hydrogen production plants. Its stated mission is to accelerate decarbonization across key sectors including mobility, construction, maritime transport, and heavy industry by supplying renewable hydrogen produced through electrolysis.
The company has been delivering high-pressure green hydrogen to customers since 2023 through two electrolyzer plants located at Kaupanes and Stord in Norway. The company describes itself as one of Norway's most experienced green hydrogen suppliers based on the operational track record of those two facilities.
Burckhardt Compression traces its origins to an engineering workshop founded in Basel in 1844. The company developed its first single-stage and dry-running reciprocating compressor in 1883.
Today the group is headquartered in Winterthur, Switzerland, and operates through brands including Burckhardt Compression, PROGNOST, SAMR Métal Rouge, and Shenyang Yuanda Compressor.
The group serves markets including the petrochemical and chemical industry, gas transport and storage, hydrogen mobility and energy, industrial gas, refinery, and gas gathering and processing. It maintains 36 subsidiaries and operates three manufacturing and five assembly sites across all continents.
Powering Nordic's Hydrogen Future: Stay Ahead of Every Project Milestone
Across the Nordic region, the hydrogen economy is accelerating at a pace that leaves little room for guesswork. Whether you are an infrastructure developer, an equipment supplier, or a policy-driven investor, missing a critical project announcement could mean missing your most valuable opportunity of the year.
