Austria Allocates €275 Million to Support Four National Hydrogen Projects
Austria will provide EUR 274.8 million (USD 320.3 million) to support four national hydrogen projects as the country aims to become a central hub for green hydrogen in Europe, according to the Federal Ministry of Economy. The funding decision was made by the ministry in October 2025.
Implementation and Administration
The implementation of this funding initiative will be handled by Austria Wirtschaftsservice GmbH (aws), the state-owned promotional bank. This arrangement demonstrates the government's commitment to utilizing established financial institutions to manage the distribution of hydrogen project funding.

Broader Investment Strategy
The EUR 274.8 million allocation represents part of Austria's comprehensive plan to invest EUR 820 million between 2024 and 2026 in hydrogen production, storage, and infrastructure development. This multi-year investment strategy indicates a sustained commitment to developing the hydrogen sector across various components of the value chain. The spending framework operates under regulations established by the hydrogen promotion act.
Legislative Framework Development
Austria is currently preparing the gas industry act, which will establish the legal framework necessary for creating a national hydrogen starter network. This legislation is also designed to facilitate Austria's integration into the broader European hydrogen grid system. The implementation of this law is expected to occur by the middle of 2026, providing a clear timeline for the regulatory foundation needed to support the country's hydrogen ambitions.
Regional Integration and the Southern Corridor Project
In parallel, Austria is playing an active role in the Southern Corridor project, which aims to establish a hydrogen pipeline connection from North Africa through Italy and Austria to Central Europe. A joint declaration with Germany, Italy, Algeria, and Tunisia has laid the foundation for bringing green hydrogen on an industrial scale to Austria and Germany by 2035, the ministry confirmed.
This cross-border initiative is expected to enhance energy security across Central Europe, create new partnerships with North African producers, and position Austria as a key transit hub for hydrogen flows.
National Vision
The government started the development of a national hydrogen import strategy in September, seeking to ensure future supply routes, partnerships, and investment security, and to strengthen international and European co-operation. In parallel, Austria supports the phase-out of Russian gas, a decision agreed by EU energy ministers at the Council of the European Union.
