Arm Inaugurates New Bengaluru Office to Design 2nm Chips for Mobile Phones and Electronic Products
Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister of Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & Information Technology, led the inauguration of ARM's new office in Bengaluru. The minister announced that the new Bengaluru unit of ARM will design chips, including 2nm chips, for various electronic products, including mobile phones.
Significance for India's Semiconductor Journey
Vaishnaw called the new office opening “a significant milestone in India's semiconductor journey.” He outlined the government's comprehensive approach to the semiconductor sector, stating, “Our objective is to design and manufacture semiconductors, along with the equipment and materials required for them.” The minister emphasized the long-term nature of this initiative, explaining, “This is a very long visionary process and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has provided clear guidance on this.
With a vision for the next 20 years in the semiconductor sector, our youth and talented engineers will get the best opportunities in the world.”
Electronics Manufacturing Growth
Vaishnaw highlighted significant growth in India's electronics manufacturing sector over the past decade. Electronics manufacturing has increased sixfold in the last 11 years and is currently an industry worth INR 11.5 lakh crore. The minister noted that exports have increased eightfold during this period, with electronics becoming a major export product for India.
The minister added that the growth in electronics manufacturing is doubling the demand for semiconductor chips. He described the industry's evolution, stating that the journey began with the assembly of mobile phones and laptops, is now moving towards the production of their models, components, and finished products. He emphasized that “we are moving forward in this journey in a very systematic way.”

Semiconductor Talent Development and Education
The minister addressed the talent requirements for the growing semiconductor sector, noting that the semiconductor sector is growing into a trillion-dollar industry and the need for talent is equally important. He described the current period as “an opportune time” for this development. To meet these talent needs, 278 institutions and universities are currently working in the semiconductor field, with their students engaged in the design and innovation of semiconductor chips.
The minister reported concrete results from these educational efforts, stating that “currently, 28 chips designed by students from 25 institutions have been taped out.”
India's Semiconductor Mission Progress
Vaishnaw provided an update on India's Semiconductor Mission, explaining that “we have practically completed the first version of India's Semiconductor Mission and are now heading towards the second version.” The upcoming phase will focus on “the production of equipment and materials required for semiconductor chips.” Earlier during the day of the inauguration, the minister discussed the manufacturing of high precision components used in semiconductor manufacturing equipment.
Carborundum Universal Ltd (CUMI) showcased materials that are used in making equipment for manufacturing semiconductors during this discussion.
