Amazon Web Services (AWS), the world's leading cloud computing provider, has received the green light to build its first data center in Chile. This USD 205 million project marks a significant milestone for the company's expansion in South America and reflects the burgeoning demand for cloud services in the region.
The data center, to be located in Santiago's Padre Hurtado district, will span 18.7 hectares and comprise two construction phases. The initial phase, commencing in March 2024, will see the construction of a 4,630-square-meter facility, slated to become operational by April 2025. The second phase, scheduled for December 2028, will add another 3,470 square meters, with operations expected to begin in April 2030.
The data center, slated for construction in the Santiago Metropolitan Region, will offer a full suite of AWS cloud services, including computing, storage, networking, analytics, and artificial intelligence. This will provide Chilean businesses and organizations with access to cutting-edge cloud infrastructure, enabling them to innovate, scale their operations, and improve efficiency.
This landmark development comes on the heels of AWS's January 2023 launch of a local zone in Santiago. Local zones are smaller, edge computing deployments designed to serve applications requiring ultra-low latency for local users.
