The installation of all inter-array cables at the He Dreiht offshore wind farm has been completed, marking a key milestone in the development of Germany’s largest offshore wind project currently under construction. The final cable, linking the last of 13 strings to the BorWin epsilon converter platform, was successfully installed on July 1.

Located in the German North Sea, the 960 MW He Dreiht wind farm is being developed by EnBW and is expected to generate enough electricity to power approximately 1.1 million households. The project is a joint venture, with EnBW holding a 50.1% stake and the remaining 49.9% owned by a consortium comprising Allianz Capital Partners, AIP, and Norges Bank Investment Management.

Cable installation began on March 10, with the vessels Seaway Aimery and Seaway Moxie responsible for laying and pulling all 64 inter-array cables across the site.

Technical Execution and Project Timeline

The subsea inter-array cables, rated at 66 kV, were supplied by JDR Cable Systems under a 2022 contract with Seaway7, the company responsible for engineering, procurement, installation, and commissioning (EPIC).

Seaway Aimery is now trenching the final cables, while Seaway Moxie is completing the remaining jointing and routing work. The completion of this phase brings the project closer to its anticipated operational date in late 2025.

Turbine installation is currently underway, with the first of 64 Vestas 15 MW wind turbines already in place.

Once operational, He Dreiht will contribute significantly to Germany’s renewable energy capacity, supporting national goals to expand clean electricity generation and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
