Saudi developer ACWA Power has signed an agreement with Syria's Ministry of Energy to study and propose renewable energy projects, including up to 1,000 megawatts (MW) of solar and storage capacity, as well as 1,500 MW of wind power. The deal was announced during Saudi Arabia's participation in the Damascus International Fair, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

The agreement extends beyond renewable energy development to include evaluating Syria's existing power plants for potential upgrades and conducting technical studies to optimize the country's electricity grid and energy mix.

Additional Saudi Energy Partnerships

Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) signed a separate agreement covering electricity generation, transmission, and distribution, including technical and consulting support. The Saudi Electricity Project Development Company also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) focusing on engineering services and grid infrastructure projects.

Oil and Gas Sector Agreements

Six additional memoranda of understanding were signed between Syrian authorities and Saudi companies covering oil and gas exploration, drilling, natural gas processing, geophysical surveys, seismic data analysis, and research in geosciences, SPA reported. Saudi firms TAQA and ADES Holding signed MoUs on oil and gas field development.

Arabian Drilling inked an MoU for oilfield services, maintenance, and training, while ARGAS signed an MoU for geophysical and geological surveys.

Scope of Technical Studies

The ACWA Power agreement encompasses comprehensive technical assessments of Syria's energy infrastructure. The studies will focus on proposing renewable energy solutions while evaluating existing power generation facilities for optimization opportunities. The technical studies will also examine Syria's electricity grid to determine improvements to the overall energy mix.

The renewable energy component specifically targets substantial capacity additions, with the proposed solar and storage projects representing up to 1,000 MW of capacity and wind power projects potentially reaching 1,500 MW.
