The United Kingdom and Scotland plan to build two new green freeports in Scotland

The UK government and the Scottish government have agreed to work together to build two green freeports in Scotland.

The UK government plans to spend up to $70.41 million (£52 million) on the new ports.

Potential bidders for the project will be required to commit to achieving net-zero energy by 2045.

The bidding procedure will begin in the spring, after which the bids will be examined and the winning sites will be announced.

The new venues are slated to open in the spring of next year.

"Freeports will help to accelerate our plan to level communities across the UK," stated UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

"They have the potential to be truly transformative by creating jobs and investment opportunities that enable people to achieve their full potential, and I am delighted that people across Scotland will benefit from the two new green freeports."

In keeping with the Levelling Up White Paper, this agreement will support the UK Government's long-term goal to deliver opportunity more evenly across the UK.

Officials from the UK and Scottish governments will assess the potential proposals to ensure that the bidders share the same goals.

Any sea, air, or rail port that forms part of a partnership with other enterprises, the council, and other appropriate public entities will be eligible to bid.

However, while establishing the ports, the participating consortia will be required to deliver benefits to local communities and work toward the net-zero goal.

The UK Department for Transport established a $27.53 million (£20 million) initiative in March to encourage maritime industry innovation.
