Stargate Michigan Campus

data centers in michigan

The Stargate Michigan campus is being developed by Related Digital with a planned capacity of 1 GW. It is part of the mega OpenAI and Oracle 4.5 GW Stargate project. The project construction is expected to begin in early 2026.

The campus was announced in October 2025 by Related Digital, a data center development and investment platform founded by and a part of Related Companies in Saline Township, Michigan. The Stargate Michigan campus will use a closed-loop cooling system that significantly reduces water consumption. Power will be supplied by DTE Energy using existing excess transmission capacity, and any required upgrades will be funded by the project rather than ratepayers. About USD 500 billion will be invested in this project over four years to meet the computing needs of the project.

Hyperscale Data Michigan AI Data Center Campus

Hyperscale Data Inc. in July 2025 announced the Michigan AI Data Center Campus, with a capacity of 340 MW. This announcement is a part of their phased expansion to support AI, machine learning, and high-performance computing (HPC) workloads.

Currently, the campus has an operational 30 MW capacity. As per the company’s announcement, Hyperscale Data Inc. plans to expand the capacity to a further 40 MW by Q2 of 2027. An additional 270 MW by Q3 of 2029, with plans to bring the total plant capacity to 340 MW buildout within 44 months from execution of the agreement with the local utility provider, securing the funding.

The campus is spread across a 34-acre site and provides colocation and hosting services for emerging AI ecosystems and other industries. In February 2025, Alliance Cloud Services, LLC (ACS), a wholly owned subsidiary of Hyperscale Data Inc., signed an agreement with a local utility to increase the facility's power to 300 MW. The final letter of authorization is currently under negotiation, and once executed, the full upgrade is expected to be completed within 44 months. ACS has also signed an agreement with a local natural gas facility to supply an additional 40 MW of power.

Switch’s Steelcase Pyramid Campus

Switch’s Steelcase pyramid campus in Gaines Township is a massive investment by the company. Located in Kent County, the seven-story pyramid building was used by Steelcase as a corporate design center and was built with an investment of USD 111 million. It was opened in 1989. When Steelcase moved out, Switch acquired the campus from Steelcase for USD 4 million and reopened it in 2017 with an investment of USD 22.2 million.

Since then, the project underwent multiple expansions. The first phase of the project delivered more than 225,000 sq ft (20,900 sqm) of white space, while the second phase delivered 312,000 square feet, which began in 2022, completed in spring 2025. The construction of the third phase is expected to start soon. The site will eventually offer 1.8 million sq ft (167,225 sqm) of white space and up to 320 MW of power capacity, at a cost of approximately USD 5 billion.

DAMAC's Michigan Data Center Development

The Damac Properties (DAMAC) announced its plans to construct a data center with an investment of USD 500 million. The data center will include installation of server racks, power consumption, storage arrays, networking gear, cooling systems, chiller plants, air handlers, and more. Owned by DAMAC, the construction of the project is expected to commence in Q1 2026 and is expected to be completed in Q4 2028.

Thor Equities Michigan Data Center

Thor Equities proposed a data center campus in Ann Arbor, Augusta Township, Michigan. The Michigan Data Center, also known as Ann Arbor Data Center, will be developed through Form8tion unit, a digital infrastructure investment and development arm of Thor Equities. The company has acquired 800 acres for this 100 MW data center project with an investment of up to USD 1 billion.

The project was announced in 2025 and is currently facing zoning and environmental review challenges. In June 2025, the Augusta Township Planning Commission recommended denying Thor Equities’ zoning request, citing inconsistencies with land-use plans. The Washtenaw County Water Resources Office also requested further environmental studies. Despite this, Thor Equities representatives stated the company remains committed to revising plans and continuing engagement with local officials.

Conclusion

Michigan’s data center market is evolving rapidly, shaping the state into one of the Midwest’s most promising digital infrastructure hubs. From data center projects like Stargate Michigan Campus, Switch’s Pyramid Campus in Grand Rapids, to Thor Equities’ USD 1 billion Augusta Township campus near Ann Arbor, Michigan data center market is seeing a surge. These initiatives show that there is a rising need for digital infrastructure that can handle a lot of traffic, is eco-friendly, and is ready for AI.

Additional data center developments in Metro Detroit, Howell Township, and Livingston County highlight the state’s initiatives in further boosting domestic data center operators. With its proximity to major population hubs like Chicago and Toronto, Michigan continues to offer strategic connectivity, low energy costs, and a stable business environment for tech giants, colocation services, and data center developers.
