The green hydrogne projects in Europe is leading to a multibillion-euro worth green hydrogen market. Having the challenging task of decarbonizing various industries, Europe has set goals for reducing CO2 emissions. As per Blackridge's Global Market Report, 34 Mt and 54 Mt of clean hydrogen by 2040 and 2050, respectively, to achieve a net-zero emission target.

With the increase in hydrogen demand, large scale project developers are driving industrial-scale green hydrogen projects in Europe. In this, blog we will cover top 5 upcoming green hydrogen projects in Europe ranked based on their hydrogen production capacity:

BrintØ Green Hydrogen Island

The BrintØ green hydrogen island is planned as a large-scale green hydrogen island near the North Sea. This green hydrogen project in Denmark will produce about 10 GW of green hydrogen from offshore wind on its completion by 2030.

It is built at an area of 20,000 km2 sandbank on the Danish part of Dogger Bank. The BrintØ green hydrogen island will produce about 1 million tonnes of green hydrogen on its commission. This will fulfill 7% of Europe’s hydrogen demand by 2030.

Under the developer CIP (Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners), the overall project will consist of offshore wind, Power-to-X facilities, an artificial island, and hydrogen pipeline. This island will be connected to a 10 GW offshore wind project that will produce power sufficient for 10 million European households.

Currently, the project is under construction, it includes offshore wind, Power-to-X installations and hydrogen export pipeline. The green hydrogen produced will be exported across northwestern Europe in countries like Germany, Netherlands, and Belgium.

Aqua Ventus

The Aqua Ventus green hydrogen project is an offshore project that produces hydrogen from saltwater through wind turbines and electrolysis processes. It is built by RWE Renewables and Aqua Ventus Forderverein in a joint venture. This green hydrogen project uses electrolyzer with a 10 GW in the German North Sea. This capacity can produce about 1 million metric tons of clean hydrogen annually.

The project is built at an estimated project cost of EUR 6 billion, including setting up offshore wind turbines, electrolysis infrastructure and storage facilities with transmission networks. This project was financed with EUR 12.48 million by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. This project construction began in 2020 and will be completed by 2030.

Holland Hydrogen I

Holland Hydrogen I is built by Shell and will be constructed on Tweede Maasvlakte in the port of Rotterdam. With an electrolyzer capacity of 200 MW it will produce 21,900 tonnes of green hydrogen annually.

The project was announced by Shell as Europe’s biggest green hydrogen plant on 6th July, 2022 by signing an FID. The project was announced in 2019 and will commission in 2025. On 25th May 2023, Shell received EUR 150 Million for the green hydrogen project. Worley was awarded the contract of providing engineering for the Holland Hydrogen I on 11th March 2024.

The electricity will be supplied from offshore wind farm Hollandse Kust (noord), partly owned by Shell. The renewable hydrogen will be supplied through the HyTransPort pipeline to Shell Energy and Chemical Park to reduce the grey hydrogen usage in the refinery. Furthermore, the green hydrogen will reduce the carbon emissions released due to use of heavy-duty trucks.

REFHYNE?II

REFHYNE?II is an upcoming green hydrogen project developed by Sheel Deutschland GmbH. It is developed with a 100 MW electrolyser capacity that can produce about 16,060 tonnes per year.

It is developed under the EU (European Union) targets of use of renewable hydrogen and the German Federal Government’s regulatory framework. Shell has taken the FID (Final Investment Decision) on 25th July 2024, and the operations are scheduled to begin in 2027.

REFHYNE ii

The project was initiated in 2021 and on-site groundworks are under progress leading to infrastructure development activities. This green hydrogen project capacity is high compared to REFHYNE I that produces 1300 tonnes of low carbon hydrogen per year.

The hydrogen produced from REFHYNE II will be supplied to Shell Energy and Chemicals Park to produce transport fuels with low carbon emissions. In the long term, the hydrogen produced will be supplied to industries and regional level customers.

Gigatsack Renewable Hydrogen Project

The Gigastack renewable hydrogen project is a 100 MW capacity hydrogen project. This project is led by a consortium of ITM Power, Ørsted, Phillips 66 Limited and Element Energy. It is built in two phases, the first phase 1 began in 2019 by the installation of a 5MW next generation electrolyzer stack using PEM (Polymer electrolyte membrane) electrolysis technology.

This green hydrogen project receives its power supply from Hornsea to offshore wind farms. This project is developed under the UK Government funding. It received funds of EUR 7.5 million from the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and the government of UK in February 2020.

This funding is used to conduct the FEED (Front-End Engineering Design) essential for hydrogen production system design when connected to wind farms for power supply. The ITM Power installed next-generation electrolyzer stack along with semi-automated manufacturing machines for large-scale and high-volume production.

Hydrogen Market Outlook Under European Union (EU)

The European Union (EU) adopted two new delegated acts in February 2023 to boost green hydrogen production. The first delegated act defines hydrogen-based fuels as a RFNBO (Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin). The second delegated act defines the calculation of the life-cycle of greenhouse gas emissions for RFNBO.

These delegated acts are a part of the hydrogen strategy that will promote more renewable energy sources like green hydrogen and producing clean energy.  Additionally, enhanced hydrogen infrastructure can reduce reliance on fossil fuels and ensure energy security and a smooth energy transition towards  Thus, Europe’s upcoming projects like BrintØ Green Hydrogen Island, Aqua Ventus and REFHYNE II and delegated acts positioning Europe as one of the global market leaders in green hydrogen.
